UMNO was actually quite worried that the Chinese in Singapore could deny UMNO the 66% majority in Parliament. It would foul up UMNO's plans to rewrite the constitution when they felt like it.
The same could be said of the PAP of course. Hence the GRC... -
the nature of politics in a small island. anyway it will take a new leader other than Sir name "Lee" to re-invent a more morden approach to politics in SG that are more relevant.

Tengku's idea was to kick Singapore out of Malaysia.
Let Singapore suffer, and then let Singapore come back, to a Malay Malaysia not a Malaysian Malaysia, that LKY championed.
The Malays were afraid of losing their country, like the Red Indians of America lost their country to the whites. Malaysian Malaysia means Chinese and Indians taking over Malaysia, and the Malays relegated to the kampongs and fishing villages.

Well, there are MPs who are not worthy of being MPs and some people might choose to boot out those MPs. Furthermore, even PM Goh admitted that some MPs need to be given a carpet to Parliament. Things could be very different if people vote on how good a job the MP is doing in representing their concerns etc.
Though.... admittedly, a lot of people vote based on party but I am not too sure of the statistic since none have been taken, and I doubt they will be. -

They were there before the Chinese and Indian immigrants were brought in by the British. In all respects, they are successful in retaining their rightful sovereignty over their own land.
The same can't be said of the NEP. While they don't face the problem of citizen resentment over the policy, it may have to do with the fact that it just didn't work out successfully for the Malays.
If Malay Malaysians were forced to relocate to Indonesia, you will lose a secular voice in the Muslim world, though small compared to like, say UAE. Then jihad might be more dangerous than you've experienced. -
