heh, what so paradoxical when economy does well and comes a whole lot of hikes.Originally posted by Gazelle:"I don't find the rates for those in their 40s and 50s surprising," said Dr Ang Yong Guan, chairman of the Action Group for Mental Illness. "What's paradoxical is the correlation that when the economy does well, the suicide rates go up."
He added: "It could be because people start seeing those around them becoming more successful, so they start to feel affected. This is unlike a recession, where everyone does not do well."
Instead of defending your arguement LOGICALLY, you are resorting to name calling.......I guess you are just one empty vessel trying his luck in this forum huh?So far, you seemed to be the only one resorting to name calling

Beyond the cold numbers - how much do you understand in the nature behind the high suicide rates from amongst all the rich and poor countries ?
Or are you simply satisfied that Singapore is buried under the pile of high enders ?-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can you underline which part of my sentence that has a word that is anything resembling close to [b]''name calling'' ?
If anything that is close to being ''anti-LOGICAL'' - it will be the manner in which you have responded to my post - did you run out of LOGICAL words ?
Or have you mis-read my response after experiencing your periodical bouts of hallucination again ?
Those who reach an age of impotency normally will have withdrawal symptoms that leads to frequent bouts of hallucination.
You must have reached it at such an early age after expending all your bullets in your self-acclaimed indiscriminate ways.
Surely you know that Man is given only that limited number of bullets and it must expire if you waste it all too soon ?
No wonder you have to strap on a macho Hellfire tool and hide your shrunken horny tool under a helmet.

Atobe, I think you need to grow up and learn to take some responsibility of your own action instead of always behaving like a spoilt brat expected to be given immunity for all your stupid nonsense.
I hope you can still remember this what you have posted earlier.

The standard of measure using 100,000 as a group is only a convenient form of comparison - does it regulate the base number that contribute the input ?

a) Germany has a lower per 100,000 suicide rate of 13.5 as compared to finland 20.6, when its population is 15 times larger than Finland?
b) Singapore suicide rate is 9.5 as compared to Philippine of 2.1 when the latter's population is close to 20 times larger than Singapore?
Can you at least show us that you are capable of defending your argument and not always resort to name calling and giving long arse story which nobody wants to read?![]()

My reply remains in the questions asked - as posted on 29 August 2007 at 06.40 PM. - shown above.
Now I am wondering if you are not brilliant in wasting everyone's time behaving in your characteristic imbecilic ways.
Will the influx of foreign talent disrupt the figures then?Originally posted by Gazelle:I am afraid that those figures are based on suicide rate per 100,000 people per year, hence size of nation will not distort the figures as what you are hoping for.
That is possible, because most (not all) of the suicide cases in Singapore involves Singapore born Singaporeans. And it is also possible that figures reported by other countries could also be diluted with influx of migrants. For example Switzerland is know for many multl millionaire "immigrant" who migrate there for enjoy the low income tax.Originally posted by Jontst78:Will the influx of foreign talent disrupt the figures then?

Well why swiss suicide rates are higher is open to speculation. Unless we have enough information to make a reasonable educated analysis.Originally posted by Gazelle:That is possible, because most (not all) of the suicide cases in Singapore involves Singapore born Singaporeans. What I couldnt understand is why in countries like Switzerland or Finland where quality and standard of living is so much better than Singapore still have such a high suicide rate.

This article highlighted a rise in suicide rate in the middle age group, which means that this group of people were born in the 1960s, either before or after Singapore independence and grew up in the 70s. I do believe that during that time the literacy rate in this country is still very low and most schools are still being taught in mandarin instead of English.Originally posted by Jontst78:Well why swiss suicide rates are higher is open to speculation. Think the concern should be that ours here in singapore is rising, even amidst an improving economy.
And if the minister in question really believes in the "others are better off and therefore I become depressed" theory, then it speaks of a even deeper social and cultural problem that could start a whole new, multiple page thread.

Do you see the government efforts making progress? or are the polices made improving the situation?Originally posted by Gazelle:This article highlighted a rise in suicide rate in the middle age group, which means that this group of people were born in the 1960s, either before or after Singapore independence and grew up in the 70s. Hence I do believe that these victims are mostly those who have been left behind by the fast economic transformation of this country over the past 42 years. Having said that, I also believe that there are also those who committ suicide because of financial problem such as taking loans from loan shark, gambling etc.
To tackle this problem, I think Singapore government and the community need to look into ways to recognise them as part of the builder of Singapore and offer financial aid to those who really deserve them. But I do believe that the most important help to these people will to be the love from their immediate family members.
