The Committee Against Profiteering says it is encouraged by the downward trend.
It urges hawkers to keep prices stable and not to profiteer from the GST hike, which took effect in July. - CNA/ch

Atobe should learn not to convenient blame the GST for any price increase of food products, instead he should take time to find out the real reason for some of the price increase we see in day to day FMCG products we consume.Originally posted by Atobe:Another useless carpet begging antics from a useless animal blindly willing to indiscriminately sniff and lick up any kind of BS dispensed by the MIW.
Visit any Food Court operated by the S-11 or Kopitiam chains - and unless the person is simply daft not to notice that a can of aerated drink will have a new price of $1.20 to $1.40 from the usual $1.10 to $1.30 depending on the location of the Food Courts.
'Kopi-O' and 'Teh-O' will have seen a price increase of 10 cents from the previous 60 or 70 cents - and this will already represent a price increase of more then 10% after the additional 2% GST increase.
Most hawkers may not increase price but the portions of the main and added items have been reduced for the same food that is sold at the same price.
Costs must be met by any enterprise to maintain profitability.
Is the government expecting the food retailers to be altruistic in reducing their profit and cover additional costs that must be incurred when the same is caused by Government policies ?
Even as the Supermarkets delayed the price revisions to their current stocks of items sold for the next three months, as they prepare their system and prices to reflect new prices - we should be prepared to see the prices being the odd cents being rounded up into some convenient and manageable numerals - all at the expense of the consumer.
Expect to see higher Year-end Results from the Supermarkets as additional revenues are gained from the odd cents rounded up.
Inflation is not a localized problem, it is something that is happening around the world, and prices will continue to go up unless we can find renewable resources to solve the global hunger for energy.Originally posted by de_middle:which goes to say any price increase can never be justified becoz of so many economics factors & reasons....so just suck it up![]()
everyone passes the bug around so as consumers we just accept. no way to question coz there'll be a thousand reasons behind it.Originally posted by maurizio13:Hehehe......
If prices haven't increased, means the portion must have decreased.
Most hawkers have already increased up to $0.50 for their usual plate of food, if you persist in buying at the regular price, they will still entertain your request, but portions will have decreased by $0.50 too.
If I sell chicken rice at $3.00, you are a difficult customer you want $2.50, I chop $2.50 worth of chicken rice.![]()
do you work for goverment body? if not, which sector you work in? all your answer sound so politically correct!!!Originally posted by Gazelle:Inflation is not a localized problem, it is something that is happening around the world, and prices will continue to go up unless we can find renewable resources to solve the global hunger for energy.

a) Packaging - Price of steel, aluminum, plastic etc will have a direct impact on the cost of packaging, and they are ALL at record high.
b) Sugar - Most drinks contain high % of sugar and sugar price is at all time high
c) Distribution cost - Price of gasoline will have a direct impact on the distribution cost and price of oil as we all know are also at record high level
d) Rental - The biggest cost component foodcourt is the rental which will be affected by rising property prices.
Another failed attempt by Atobe??

No more '''' to end a self-defeating line, but now turning ''
'' with the characteristic premature ejaculation of hollow celebratory joy ?
Is it not stupid that to list all the other material causes from [b]a] to d] - as if all these up-stream suppliers are not similarly affected by the 2% GST increase ?
Are you living in some kind of compartmentalised world ?
a] Since when was food packaging at hawker centers made out of steel, aluminium and plastic ? Is this not another brilliant Gazelle attempt to divert attention by starting another new irrelevant line of thinking ?
b] Sugar - how much sugar is used in a glass of coffee, tea or aerated drinks - that justify increases in prices at such amounts ? Supermarket is already making profits by selling aerated can drinks at 0.45 cents per can, and yet the Food Courts are not satisfied selling the same at $1.10 to $1.30 but will still increase to ever higher amounts at the slightest opportunity.
c] Distribution cost - Oil has yet to reach its all time high of over US$70 per barrel, and had slid down to as low as US$65 per barrel during July 2007. Even as petrol is fluctuating, most distribution vehicles are running on diesel which has remained relatively stable. COE for goods vehicle has continued to go down compared to the early days when COE was first implemented.
d] Rental - the cost of rental are NOT affected by property prices, as rental contracts are tied over a term period. However, monthly rentals ARE subject to GST, and the 2% GST will be levied on all who rent any properties.
Anything silly reasons that you may wish to add to divert attention to the main content that you have started that limit the argument to GST hike - as stated in your own thread ?
Perhaps you may want to edit the subject title of this Thread that you started - so as to give yourself a wider scope to argue with me with a full Ace-Cards in your hand ?
Looks like you can only play poker by fixing the cards in your own favor, still you do not know how to use your credits wisely, and refuse to learn NOT to bet when your position is still not firm.

[b]SINGAPORE : Only a handful of hawkers have raised their prices after the GST hike in July, according to a survey by the Department of Statistics.
It showed that only 0.4 percent out of 1,300 hawkers surveyed raised prices between August 4 to 17. - CNA/ch

I do eat hawker food everyday, and so far the prices have been very stable. However I suspect that some hawker might have to reduce the quantity of some ingredient.Originally posted by justcooler:What is there to talk about, if the price is raised before the survery date ???![]()

For me, I usually dont bother because there isnt must to read anyway. just a bunch of childish argument.
how true.... do it again after 6 months when all the big boys like NTUC, Sheng Siong incorporate the 2% GST into their costOriginally posted by justcooler:What is there to talk about, if the price is raised before the survery date ???![]()
a bowl of mee-pok dry costs $3.50 at food court....the noodles in ithe bowl....only require one grab with the chopsticks. 2pcs of fish cake probably used ham slicer to cut, 1pc meatball, minced meat probably weigh less than 10grams, wafer thin black mushroom slices & a bowl of MSG soup.Originally posted by Gazelle:I do eat hawker food everyday, and so far the prices have been very stable. For me, that is fine since most of the time singaporean tend to eat more than they need.
"win-win" situation??![]()
