Food portion surely decrease. Before the GST increase, a stall selling porridge with alot of rice. But after the GST, the porridge same price but become watery. Most of the food store in my neighborhood, increase by 50cents, except for a few stall.
Some still had the cost label on their stall $2, but when you ask for the price, it $2.50. Some even stick .50 behind their $2 label on the stall.
Some can drinks even cost $1.50. But I don't buy from them. Because you are buying ice at 80 cents to $1. I rather buy from supermarket selling at 50cent to 70cent only.
Don't think the hawkers are stupid. They know how to avoid being caught. There r so many talents among the hawkers. -

Me too... and his word make sense... Price had increase after the GST hike. Inflation are higher as a result. So, GST does contribute to the price hike that we are seeing in our everyday life. They can come up with alot of reason lah!!! If food court can charge $2 for a can drink, what law is there to say that coffee shop cant sell can drink at $1.40? Din u heard the news report?? This quarter inflation is higher then last year. Normally we have a inflation of 1~2% per year. But this 1/4 alone we had an inflation of 1~2%. Hawker prices have not gone full blown and hiked in many places, but food courts have. Eventually, the competitiveness and higher costs are just gonna drive the hawkers to up their own prices. Everyone is paying more for the same; why should hawkers think differently?
Fairprice has announced short-term price control measures for necessities such as condensed milk, bread and other items; this pro-active gesture serves only to muzzle the detractors that cost of living is slowly but surely going up. Fairprice, being a 'govt' sponsored supermarket chain has no choice but to hold prices to create the facade of altruism. This 'noble' act only delays the inevitable and shows that even govt-run organizations are not immune of the laws of simple economics.
The results of the survey are predictable but skewed; for example, why weren't data obtained from food courts - the direct competitor of hawker centers? Had that happened, ST would not dare publish the comparative statistics, because it WILL REFLECT a truer image of the overall price hikes for food.
It continues to reinforce the point that statistics that serve the govt's interest will continue to be published. It will take a collective effort to convince those in power to 'GET REAL' - prices have gone up. Even the vain and arrogant emperor had to concede to the common peasants, who laughed at his 'new invisible robes'.
This piece of information merely serves notice to Hawkers that they are already 'behind the times'. If anything, it will expedite their plans to jack up hawker prices.
Watch for it in the coming months. -
