The greater the Government's efforts to raise material prosperity, the more irrelevant and even harmful will the role of the political activist be seen.
I don't agree with this point of view.

I firmly believe that a model of governance in which political dissent has little or no role is deeply flawed on two points:
First, the need for expression can never be suppressed;
Second, if it is, then it is all the worse for the society.
This need is something natural, inborn, universal, something that defines us uniquely as a species. It has to do with the human sense of self, identity and belonging. It is manifest in all societies, whether full, partial or nascent democracies.
Even in a non-democracy it is not absent; it has simply gone underground and is just waiting for the first chance to surface. It can neither be intimidated into permanent silence nor seduced by material rewards. -

Why not, cartel practices are quite common in business world.

Simulated? I didnt know the owner of Sheng Siong who used to own a pig farm in LCK, is part of LKY simulated competition.
I usually classify the business in my industry as Competition or No-Competition.
Then there is the issue of "Price-fixing" Which is a norm in the business world despite all the laws against it. Reason being its hard to prove.
I'm putting both arguments in here to facilitate discussion. Ignore the next one. -

Competition varies in different form and it doesnt necessary has to do with pricing, it could be service, quality of products and branding etc. And there is also the other issue of being a natural monopoly, such as SMRT and SBS Transit are monopolising their own track and route. As to what you claim that no companies dare to challenge GLCs, i would still say that is BS. -
read catherine lim's summary, it is quite clear that singapore achieved a lot in terms of economy and below par for political freedom. this i knew since i was a child. so nothing new here in sgforums all the complains about the government.
i remember LKY said when i was very young that political freedom of choice is a sacrifice we all have to make in exchange for progress. he delivered on his statement. we sacrificed our political freedom and indeed we got our progress. -
