Iran summoned a Swedish diplomat to its foreign ministry on Monday to protest against a cartoon in a Swedish newspaper depicting the head of Prophet Muhammad on a dog's body, Sweden's foreign ministry said.
"Gunilla von Bahr, Sweden's charge d'affaires, was summoned to the Iranian foreign ministry today where she received a protest from the Iranian government," foreign ministry spokeswoman Anna Björkander told AFP.

The Iranian government told Von Bahr the cartoon was "offensive to Prophet Muhammad," Björkander said, refusing to disclose any further details of the meeting.
The cartoon was drawn by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, whose series of drawings of the prophet as a dog have sparked a controversy in Sweden. Several art galleries refused to display the sketches amid fears of angry reactions from Muslims.
The Örebro local newspaper Nerikes Allehanda published one of the drawings on August 18 to illustrate an editorial on self-censorship and freedom of religion.
"The editorial was critical of the fact that so many had turned down Vilks's drawings for fear of the reactions they would provoke," Nerikes Allehanda's chief editor Ulf Johansson told AFP.
On Saturday, a week after the publication, a group of about 60 Muslims held a demonstration outside the newspaper's office to protest against the publication of the sketch.
The publication of 12 cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in Denmark's biggest daily Jyllands-Posten in September 2005 led to violent demonstrations throughout the Muslim world in January and February 2006.

The last caricature was supposed to defend freedom of speech and break taboos.
But again,who freedom of speech are they defending and whose taboo are they refering to.
In simplest terms,do you need to insult and provoke to "grow"?
If you do then surely there is something wrong.. -
Boundary/ies like in the case of the fish and other animals.
If you put a piece of glass in the middle of the fish tank, the fish will swim towards it and hit its head against the glass.
After many many times, the fish will swim near the glass and then swim back. Even after you remove the glass the fish will continue to do that.
If only the fish kept on testing the boundary, maybe swim slower near the glass but keep on testing whether they glass is still there, testing the boundary, only then will the fish be free.
If you willingly lock yourself up in a cage, that is your prerogative. -
From my neutral Point Of View,its the european's fault in the first place fr insulting.However,the muslim is also partly at fault for being overreactive.
I do notice that other religion parties do react but in a less provocative manner. -

It is the arrogant western liberal who thinks he can impose his values on societies who hold to norms very different from himself. But may i ask,what is the itnent of pacing the glass in the first place?
Do you not care if the fish hurts itself?

Is it not an insult to human intelligence to propagate the kind of religious values that draw Civilization back to the medieval days when camels are used to cross wide expanse of dry land reach one's destinations ?
Whose religious interpretations are Osama and his Taliban gang following ?
Are the interpretation exactly what the Prophet has intended, or is Osama and his Taliban crowd propagating their own words using the Prophet as a front ?
The drawings are a mere sarcasm and ironical view from one outside of the subject religion, even if by local standards we have been brought up to be more circumspect - does being circumspect require one to continuously be pressured in to accomodate, while the other side continue to push ?
If the Taliban crowd has no respect for the religious rights of others - blasting the century old statues of Budhism in Afghanistan despite worldwide appeals - are they entitled to any respect for their own imagined religious rights ?
This is a Globalised World, where the traffic is no longer One-Way. -
Those newspapers or magazines etc......they are just a group of people, they are publishers, writers, editors, cartoonists, etc.....those people working in there.
If a publication do something provocative, its their own responsibility, a group of people. It's not the responsibility of a whole country, of other people who totally have nothing to do with it, or might even disapprove it.
So for these cases, when certain publications offend some people, but the protest is enlarged to a whole nation, it brings an awkward situation. Nobody knows what to do.
This is just a mismatch or a misunderstanding due to a different cultural environment.
In many Asian countries and Muslim countries, press is censored, and also there is a greater emphasis on collective good over individual freedom or group freedom.
In Western countries, press is not censored, and also there is a much greater emphasis on individual freedom and group freedom.
So I see these cases more as a cultural clash.
Mind you, some groups in Western countries have channelled and targetted their 'freedom of expression' for a long time on the main religion there itself, Christianity. They also have ridiculed Christianity in many ways.
So again.......I see this more as a cultural clash, at the heart of it. It's a difference of social philosophy.
But I think to myself.....maybe this cultural clash isn't neccessary, because some newspapers or some magazines, they don't represent any nation at all. A magazine is not a president. They dont represent or symbolize a country. They dont speak on behalf of a country. It's just a group of people, and they do what they want, and other people of the entire nation should not be asked to be responsible for what these people do.

So why are the Swedes so terrified of the protests in a faraway land? Isn't it similarly freedom of expression if the Muslims in Iran and Pakistan wish to protest against this affront to their religion? Isn't it therefore fair if the Iranians choose to dispute the Holocaust? Why should the UN condemn Iran for holding a conference of academics who deny the Jewish Holocaust? Is it not fair that Iranian newspaper publishes cartoons of the devil holding up a Danish flag and the star of David? Is it wise to start another spate of attacks and retaliations? Has the world not learned anything from the tit-for-tat attacks in Palestine these 40 years? And all for what? The right to publish a foolish illustration? -
