i think many asian govt. incl. singapore's are very much conservative and thus clamp down hard on any obscure points of view, so as to remain conservative. comments?

malays vs chinese - lets not talk about it

No. it's not rumour/secret but a fact.
As officially stated in a 1987 interview when LHL(then 2nd Minister of Defence) says "If there is a conflict, if the SAF is called to defend the homeland, we do not want to put any of our soldiers in a difficult position where his emotions for the nation may be in conflict with his religion".
Fast forward 20 years later, I observed there are significant increase of ethnic Malay in many positions and rankings within SAF. Its a start which I see based very much on confidence & trust, which can be very easily shattered.
I won't deny that SAF is an race-sensitive institution. But don't forget, the very existence of Singapore today is itself driven by race factor beyond anyone's control, even for LKY and Tunku.
One also cannot ignore external pressure which seeks to exploit this fissue.
Remember JI and some supremist. Sadly even today, this tribalistic nature still exist event in the higher echelon of politics and influential. Race will always be a seductive tool for many power-hungry wannabees....at the expense of many.
