One must understand the background and history of why Mathathir has been the most vocal against SG. He was 'mistreated' when he was a medical student in SG. I think the story went like this: he took a cab to someone's house, and was dropped at the caretaker's hut instead of the main entrance. Since then he had this 'grudge' inside him for a long time. So, he viewed SG and Chinese in a very negative light. He wrote a book called the Malay Dilemma which was banned. Today, he is still in a dilemma - over political retirement, choice of successor, affirmative action, racial discrimination, Malay supremacy, and of course, Singapore. -

I was told Indonesia gave exclusive rights to Singapore to develop Batam. Former Indonesian president B.J. Habibie aspired to make Batam like Singapore, but apparently it did not work out. An international airport was not even built, and its port is small. Singapore places its interest above that of other countries.

Better economy-as compared to 22 years ago yes, it is better. Although, the precent of poverty is about 6%,it still higher than singapore's.
Better jobs-yes better jobs than 22years ago.However, more malays are benefiting from government quotas on civil service jobs and university placements.More chinese and indian talents come to singapore to work.So malay talents and remain in malaysian stagnant pond.
Better living conditions-yes better than 22 years ago. Just compare JB centre with Tampines centre. See the differences. JB potholes,dirty water supplies,rubbish all over floor,dirty female drug addicts looking johns etc etc.
Why don't Malaysia give us the state of johor to run not iskandar industrial area.See who can and will develop Johor and make it a success among the 14 states of malaysia.
