So I was right to say LHL was just putting up a show wayang wayang when he asked for opportunities to be given to ex convicts. He is really a bad actor.Originally posted by caleb_chiang:I am writing against the yellow ribbon project that they had highly promote and educate the public about giving those who had err a second chance.
But, they do not practise what they preach.
My friend who was an ex-inmate was denied a passport of his own when he tried applying for one.
Their reasons being that they want to prevent him from doing things that he once did when he went aboard.
Common sense has it that if one want to return to his own ways, it does not neccessary need to be overseas but locally as well!
So much of the yellow ribbon project that they preached... This is just bullshit...![]()
Do you think that media on this island will publish anything that criticises the government?Originally posted by casvel:should write into Straits times
i believe that they only bar him for a period of time exaple maybe 5-10 years then he will get the passport..Originally posted by caleb_chiang:I am writing against the yellow ribbon project that they had highly promote and educate the public about giving those who had err a second chance.

He already served his time and paid for his crime. So what's the reason to bar him from getting a passport. Without passport, can't even go Malaysia.Originally posted by me_a_clone:i believe that they only bar him for a period of time exaple maybe 5-10 years then he will get the passport..
i have a friend who came out and was barred from leaving sg for 10 yrs until last year then he get his passport

If the gahmen actually take some reservation in terms of dealing with those who err'ed in the past, how would you expect the public to react????Originally posted by HyperFocal:I want to criticise as well as be FAIR on this one:
Firstly, I know the government for doing things DIFFERENT from what they PREACH, and that's a fact...hence no surprise for such contradicting restrictions on an ex-con...
However, depending on the serverity or NATURE of his past crime, it may be PRUDENT to restrict issuance of his passport...
just my opinion...
did your aunt re-apply for a post in the SPF?Originally posted by caleb_chiang:If they practise employing older ppl, they would had re-employed my aunt who served for many years in the SPF...![]()
Would you re-apply when you are forced to retire?Originally posted by eagle:did your aunt re-apply for a post in the SPF?
Practising of employing older people in the economy is something that does not happen instantly.
In the case of TS's fren.... I've nothing to say...... I think should contact those involved in the yellow ribbon project for their opinion. URL is http://www.score.gov.sg/contact_info.html
Sometimes, there are just so many policies around that when something has improved, a related policy may be missed out. In these circumstances, it would be better to inform them. The same goes for any other things in life. If no reply was given, or a stupid reply is given, then it is time to complain
when she was forced to retire, how long was it before or after the policy is mentioned?Originally posted by caleb_chiang:Would you re-apply when you are forced to retire?![]()

Hi.... it would be better if you could at least state why your friend was in prison at the 1st place..... what crime or 'unlawful' thing did he/she do...Originally posted by caleb_chiang:I am writing against the yellow ribbon project that they had highly promote and educate the public about giving those who had err a second chance.

Example -
If he/she is deny a passport because of a crime like stealing, drunk driving,
fighting.... etc. Then It does seems that the Govt is having double standard.
But if it is Gang related activity (overseas money laundering), sales of weapons, drugs activity, supporting of ''terrorist'' activity...... etc. Then it would be quite right for the Govt to stop your friend from meeting such ppl outside of S'pore.
The moral of the story is that it is best to walk the straight path in life. Agree that we must be forgiven if we serve our time, but it all also depends on the crime, doesn't it.
So, what did your friend do[/b]
Opps.... didn't read this part carefully.Originally posted by caleb_chiang:If the gahmen actually take some reservation in terms of dealing with those who err'ed in the past, how would you expect the public to react????
It's just like you ask your friend to forgive another friend for something but you do not forgive another person who did the same thing to you!
It is like double standards setted within gahmen sector and public sector. So, what is the yellow ribbon project for? They might as well trash the idea totally!!!! It just make people doubt the gahmen's campaign...
I do not know how bad my friend was before he was admitted and seriously, I do not care as long as he does not carry on his old ways. But to deny him a passport and go for a hard earned holiday outside of the country that some would see his past errs as a eye sore is simply unacceptable.
He had paid for the errs he had made in the past. I do not feel that he should be continued to be imprisoned in a much larger prison(as in the country itself). That is just like expanding his area of inhabitat, a bit of freedom but still imprisoned.
I agree with some of the respondents of this thread that Straits Time do not have the guts to publish this information on their papers although they do read through the threads and gather information to publish like the few previous cases from SGforums.
The journalists and media that have guts to publish the truth do not exist in SG or had been banned in SG.![]()
The yellow ribbon project is to help ex-offender find jobs.... not a total pardon from all your crimes.Originally posted by caleb_chiang:I feel that what my friend was admitted for was not so much of the concern of this discussion.
If it would depend on the magnitude of the crime that he commit that he was denied of his passport was clearly a double standard as well.
I do agree that it might be the government intention that they wanted to prevent him from meeting others of such outside the country but no matter how safe that SG is, if he was to fall back into what he was, he would had done so after his release.
But now he had turned a new leaf and I think he should deserve the least dignity that a citizen in the country should have.
If gahmen still chose to see such person as threats... why the hell they start the yellow ribbon project in the first place and introduce threats into the private sector???
That is what my point is... preaching what one does not practice...![]()

Would you feel safe if a reform child molester is now teaching in your children's school
Would you feel safe if a reform self made terrorist, now could leave the county and travel at will
Is it wrong to keep ex-NKF chairman Richard Yong from travelling overseas, even if he had serve his time in prisonhe could have made many bank accounts under false name and is waiting to 'Migrate' overseas to be with his money......
So, until we know what your friend did.....[/b]
