In my view, political parties are the biggest yet most under-utilised platform Singapore people who are not with the PAP can use to ebb PAP's power on the country.

Unfortunately, the propaganda causes people to perceive joining the opposition as a bad, unwise thing to do.
This is to the advantage of the ruling party. This is why having dishonorable people in power is such a tragedy.
The society cannot progress, other than economically, because for the propaganda to work, people need to become delusional.
Delusions and illusions are what the ruling party sells everyday through their propaganda presses, the education system and the laws and statutes of the land. A country that institutionalized illusions and delusions and that is what Singapore is.
People that support cannot see the defects and people that oppose cannot see the successes. In their heads, they have delusions like joining the opposition is bad. -

Agree. If you want to be in politics, you have to be in a political party, so that people know where you stand and what your objectives are. Whether a petition is effective or not depends on how strong the support is. Anyway, our present political system is such that even before we cast our votes the incumbent party already wins the elections as there are not enough opposition candidates to contest the elections.
But we don't need to topple the govt to see any improvement in the present situation. We only need to vote in more opposition candidates into the parliament. And here, i agree that we shouldn't be conned by the PAP that voting in the opposition would bring chaos to the country. PAP will still be the ruling party but with more opposition MP in the parliament there will be more people to check on the govt.
PAP has been in almost total control for far too long we certainly need more opposition to rein in its runaway power. But the process will be a long one unless there is an uprising.
