Bus fares go up on 1 Oct (Here we go again...)

SINGAPORE: Adult EZ—link fares for buses will increase by between one and two cents from 1 October.
Senior citizen concessionary EZ—link bus fares, which are flat fares pegged to the lowest adult fare band, will go up by two cents.
But the Public Transport Council (PTC) has decided there will be no increase in train fares.
It said the public transport operators had applied for an increase in bus and rail fares in August 2007.
After deliberating on their proposals, it approved an overall fare increase of 1.8 per cent for bus fares, but no increase for rail fares this year.
The PTC added that the majority of commuters will see no increase or a small rise in fares.
Taking into account all public transport trips, five in ten trips will see no increase while one in ten trips will see a rise of one cent.
The remaining four in ten trips will see an increase of two cents per trip.
The last time the PTC approved an increase in bus and MRT train fares was in October last year when they went up by between one and three cents.
The government and the public transport operators SMRT Corporation and SBS Transit have set aside S$3 million in public transport vouchers to help needy families cope with the latest fare increase.
The government will draw down S$2.4 million from the Public Transport Fund, which was set up to provide help to lower—income households on their public transport costs. The public transport operators on their part have set aside S$0.6 million. — CNA/ir -

I will compare the train service between here and the U-Bahn in germany. A ticket costs about 1-2 euros.
In sg, the train ticket costs about 1-2 sgd.
We earn 3k sgd, they earn 3k euros for the same job.
Fact: Germany has one of the most expensive train systems in Europe.
Fact: In Germany, there's BahnCard 50, which reduces all train tickets bought by 50%. The BahnCard 50 costs 200 euros for a year's validity. It covers tickets bought for ICE, RE, RB, etc
Which actually make Singapore trains seem expensive. -

The other day, at the coffeeshop where I was eating my fave BBQ chicken wings, the owner came to me (I am his regular customer) and said he intends to increase his price. His reason was that, his was only $1 and other places now sell $1.10 or $1.20, so he thinks he should increase.
Basically, I will not eat again if he increases his price.
However, transport is one where there is no choice. Its not as if we can say, "let's take another bus company's service since this one increases his price". -

The Bahn taxes on the non-German citizen heavily, but has the special BahnCard to ensure the citizens have affordable travel.
The concept is DIFFERENT from the EZ-Link which taxes those who do not buy EZ-Link heavily (citizen or not) -

I do not know how this works (1 to 2 cents per trip)
The last time they increased the MRT fare by 1 to 2 cents,
ended up my trip to Harbourfront cost me an extra 5 cents per trip.
I was then wondering whether they impose 1 cent per n stages or? -

you missed out the 'sacrifice' the then FM Lee made, when he had to hold back GST increase to 5% (and increase only to 4%). He said he's doing it coz of public unhappiness, but it wouldn't change much anyway. After all, 4% or 5% is only a PSYCHOLOGICAL difference.
The joker actually said that. He did not understand that in economics, psychology plays a BIG PART. -
They will never interview those who said the fare hike is unfair. Even interview them they will take it away or not telecast.
They'll only interview who will say, "its ok since the increase is only 1 to 2 cents." These people had never been poor and experience hardship before, when they are suck dry, they will know and hope they don't cry. You deserve it.
The profit commercial transport companies is very happy now. More money coming their way. -

They will always said affordable. It a rich man point of view. To them, it peanut. Because they never interview the poor people's view. I tell you they will all said not affordable, even angry.
Now saving also no use, they moment you save enough for a year, everything increase again. All your saving is been spend on the increase price. -
what i can't stand is they are so willing to add more hardship to Singaporeans (70%+ live in HDB flats), say its for the good of the country. THEN they up their own salaries to between $1,000,000 - $3,000,000 A YEAR and say "sorry, we cannot work for anything less". So basically 70% of Singaporeans should sacrifice while the ministers can enjoy life without hardship (less than $1,000,000 a year = hardship???). Ridiculous.

Can I assume tat the gov sucks the $$ out of the Average Incomes for the Lower-Incomes? I sure hope it's tat way..at least i wont feel so inbalance..Everything raises but salary!!
