Response from MOE to gay teachers disturbing

Thank you to the person who placed the link to the original "letter" that Otto wrote.
I think everyone should read the article before blindly commenting on the idea of the article.
He mentioned something in it that stuck me to be cruely true.
In school and outside school, there are very few avenues for a homosexual teenager to turn to for help and guidance.
And this in turn creates misguided individuals (some..not all) who get fingers pointed at them through out their lives.
You breed them....so that you can condemn them. Good job.
If schools are to remain solely for academic purposes then i suggest almost all schools to take the time to "restructure" their already in place school mottos that boast fact like "grooming and polishing young minds and hearts"
Anyways, the "gay agenda" has been discussed so much recently....especially in Singapore....i sense a big change coming soon...despite all the efforts from small minded people to nip the supposed "problem" in the bud.
I look forward to what i expect to be a big breakthrough for Singapore's overall development. -

The key is: a heterosexual is no different from a homosexual as both have sexual orientations, albeit differently. If the latter is deemed as a danger to students of the same sex, then so are the heterosexuals to the opposite sex. And it is high time that society realises that.

i think he should not have admitted it. after all, there is a huge social stigma towards gays in a conservative society like Singapore.

First of all, this is an interesting topic.
However, we can also say that this is not an interesting topic at all.
A teacher wrote that he is gay, then the school and MoE became uncomfortable.
So, what is the issue here..?
Everything is normal.
What do you expect?
A teacher wrote that he is gay, then the school and MoE welcomed him and encouraged more gay teachers to do the same. They say that it is his personal freedom, and the school and MoE can accept him as a gay, no problem.
Do you expect this kind of line....?
If I read this kind of article in newspaper, I would be shocked, and I dont know which country I live in. I would be confused and surprised, how come now the education sector already changed so drastically?

The response by MoE, and the school, is just a common, expected response from one of main institutions of our society. As long as our wider society cannot fully accept homosexuality, then this main pillar will reflect this view.
Education is very 'pure' and conservative sector. Everything concerning kids is 'conservative'. You see even violent movies are supposed to be moved to midnight because kids are supposed to sleep already and not watch TV by that time. We as a society want to protect our kids.
The response by MoE is very telling: "...does not condone any open espousal of homosexuality by a teacher through any form" as "(teachers) are often seen as role models by their students"
From there it already captures the whole essence, the position and the idea, the whole notion that education is 'conservative' , teachers are 'role models' , and kids are to be 'protected', and this is true everywhere in the world.
I would be very concerned, the day MoE reversed this position. But it will never happen.
As to the debate about the nature of homosexuality, lets just say.....its irrelevant. It's not what the scientists say, and it's not whether it is right or wrong, acceptable or not acceptable, but rather, it is what the neighbourhood uncle, aunty, your next-door neighbour say. What is the perception in society. People still think homosexuality is a 'deviation'. This is what matters. As long as the wider view of the society remains like this, the education sector, as a bulwark, will reflect this view, for sure. And that is what they are supposed to do.

I do not think that homosexuality in teachers would eventually lead the students to become homosexual as well. It would depends on the sexual preferences of each indiviual although there is no doubt that the parents would push the blame to that teacher if their shild so happen to be homosexual...

What's wrong with being homosexual?
I've got gay friends (I'm not gay btw) and they're just as normal as everyone, other than their prefrence.
Like some people are vegetarian, some people don't eat a particular kind of food cos of religion, shouldn't sexual preference be treated the same way too?

Staying still may not be a good option all the time. There's a reason that change is the only constant. Those who do not understand this, too bad.
Perhaps when you have GLBT friends, then you will realise the importance of respecting others for who they are, and that legislation that legalises discrimination should be struck down.
