KUALA LUMPUR - A young soldier shot and killed a colleague in the head after 'fooling around' with his rifle at the Sungai Besi camp.
A police spokesman said Wednesday's accident happened at an entrance to the camp, just after the soldier had reported for duty.
Defence Minister Najib Tun Razak said yesterday the soldiers were playing around.
'The incident is an unintentional accident,' he said.
'They were like kids, fooling around pointing the rifle. Suddenly the trigger was pulled accidentally without realising there was ammunition in it.'
'Such things can happen anytime.'
The 24-year-old Royal Malay Regiment private will face inquiries from both the police and the Malaysian Armed Forces, he said.
How come the MAF defence minister like that say one? It's like as if their soldiers are expendable and he doesn't care less.... I felt that it's a very irresponsible response to the public (although I would care less) and very disregarding to safety in the army........some more say they are like kids...the soldier 24 liao leh......

Although he's a MAF troop, I still feel sorry for that chap (and any other soldier around the world) who died in vain.......tsk tsk tsk........dun MAF have TSR regulations on arms handling?

also reminds me of a grenade range accident few years back involving a officer with stupidity factor (as a result, lost his arm)

It just shows how serious their mentality is. No one in their right mind would point a rifle in any direction other than straight up or down in camp, loaded or not, and he dare say the soldiers were fooling around and playing.
It is not when it can happen or how often it can happen. It is HOW it happened. -
yes... shows a total lack of professionalism and responsibility. u don't even point an unloaded weapon at someone because (a) its rude and (b) shit happens! even blanks can blind u if u're not careful!
how can anyone be so careless!
still shrug it off as if its no big deal... anyone remembers the officer cadet who blew his friend away in the training shed? he wasn't even playing around but one second's lapse of judgement killed his friend and scarred him emotionally forever.
these people still happy happy play with loaded rifles some more... what can i say... -

Heck... one of my buddies nearly blew me away during range. Instead of carrying his rifle by the handle during the run-down, he held it by the pistol grip!
The bullet kicked up a spurt of dirt 1 meter in front of me.
Needless to say, I wasn't too pleased.
Neither was the LT.

Er... FireIce... sad to say, but the compensation ain't that big. Shit happens during training, and we accept that. I've known a couple of fellows who bought it during training already. One neighbour, one course-mate.
Not due to such a dumb reason as being shot in the head by a buddy fooling around with his rifle, of course. -

dunno about the MAF, but the first thing they teach us when we draw our weapons is NEVER point a weapon at someone unless u intend to waste him... not even an unloaded one.
harimau, you claim to be a former m'sian trooper. so tell us man. is that proper procedure? is it proper procedure to be mucking around with a loaded weapon? is it right to point a weapon at your fellow soldiers? is it the correct attitude to assume that nothing bad will happen when handling a weapon?
we just think that it was a ridiculously stupid thing to do! it has happened to SAF before because there was a lapse in procedure. the troops were trained and briefed but they got tired and careless. checks were enforced but shit happens. it was tragic and procedures were reviewed to prevent such further mishaps during life firing exercises.
this incident implies that there was no procedure and mucking around with a loaded weapon is just plain stupid! this incident implies that something was fundamentally wrong at the most basic level!
most SAF NSmen would be familiar with something called "the stupidity factor" and THIS is the most obvious manifestation of it! -

I totally disagree with the way certain parties handling the so call accidently fired rifle-read my lips -the so call incident.I believed there's another story behind it.
I never claimed i'm a Malaysian trooper-i just said i served the army before-that's all.
But of course-the stupid private should be charged in court-he shouldn't have played with a rifle in the first place(he's on the way to the armoury after manning the guard post) -

It happened as a result of stupid behaviour when handling a dangerous weapon.
It happened as a result of stupid attitude in not believing and remembering the supreme instruction when handling a dangerous weapon - never fool around with a gun.
Call the "incident" by any name that you want - but if the same happen in the SAF, the soldier will definitely get the maximum that is deserving of the stupidity that occurred.
We Singaporeans do not fuddle and muddle with words, this probably explain the fudging and muddling of issues by your PM and FM in the current negotiations; and the disease has also affected your DM too.
