earthquake risk zone

should the government be thinking about declaring singapore a earthquake risk area? after the recent few tremors felt by people as far as hougang and ang mo kio? Even for today's earthquake with much lower magnitude, people living in marine parade which was built on reclaimed land, made the most calls to the police. Imagine with the possibility our future financial district is to be up and running on reclaimed land, should it be feasible to protect buildings built on reclaimed land to have certain safeguards against tremors or low magnitude earthquakes?

BCA guidelines does ensure that buildings should be able to withstand such minor earthquakes. I mean, if you don't feel the slight shake when the soil will amplify it then it is against the logics of nature. But these are not supposed to cause structural damages to our buildings.
Such soil which will amplify seismic waves are Old Alluvium "A" and Sedimentary Rocks "S", versus Igneous Rocks "I".
But you are right; probably it's time for stronger buildings, but the tremors will not go away. We are just plain lucky that nothing inordinary has happened, like intraplate earthquakes. -
technically, sg does not lie in the quake zone, but the tremors are becoming more pronounced in recent times....sg has mainly soft ground and that could be a concern, especially with the extensive rail network...

I fear the outcome should it eventualy inch close enough to topple buildings here...
Then we'll see how worthy our multi-million salaried government is....
Maybe they'll come up with Earthquake Tax, and make people pay for the damages...won't be surprised at all.... -

i think that if they should make some preparations for the new marina bay area..they should say that in view of the stronger tremors that singapore feel, it is just pragmatic to incorporate some earthquake proof design into their structure. Although it will add up some cost into the project, but i don't think it will be much too expensive because we just need basic protection..not something as complicated as the earthquake proof design that protects taipei 101.
