Which was why I said I dunno whether they followed ROE or not. Come on, the situation so chaotic, who really knows what happened? Whether you push me first or I push you first (figuratively speaking).Originally posted by soul_rage:But soldiers are criminals according to Military Law if they open fire at unarmed civilians.
ROE is that unless you think you are threatened, you cannot open fire at innocent civilians.
Obeying the president or constitution may or may not protect them.

so this is all done in the name of peace?Originally posted by Icemoon:So said that? The Archbishop.
Who is the Archbishop? A representative of the people (in a sense).
Undeniably, what the Archbishop was saying, to the effect, was that they need more people like the innocent Jap reporter to be shot.Originally posted by 4getmenot:

The junta leader, Senior General Than Shwe, 73, also visited Singapore in January for what an embassy official said were medical checks.

If you haven't a clue what moral authority can do to increase the respect and pressure an alliance can have on one (potential) member state, just take a look at the EU. In recent years, just consider how many countries from the former Eastern-bloc have actually had their membership application turned away/delayed because of their failure to meet certain provisions/safeguards (anything from susceptible human rights records to streamlining their constitution to meet the requirements of EU membership) that need to be fulfilled for an EU-membership.
Now, try comparing ASEAN (which is nothing more than a loose association of rogue and/or corrupt regimes that are basically inefficient in terms of exerting any sort of an influence on others) to the EU. Is it any wonder why the international community disregards the role of ASEAN at large and instead regard the UN to be a more viable outlet to resolve the crisis?
Huh .. trying to paint a picture of monks killing monks?Originally posted by LazerLordz:From internal source: It is heard that the junta has set a plot to assassinate the most senior venerable monks (Sanga Maha Naryaka) tonight as if it is done by the monks involved in the protest.

The people involved in the '88 crackdownOriginally posted by LazerLordz:Yes.
In fact, there have been reports of soldiers from the 22nd Division being tasked to act as agent provocateurs in order to stir up more trouble in Yangon and Mandalay.
It will be expected ... this kind of tactic is used favourably to give them a reason for crackdown. especially dealing with peaceful protest. they gonna make it not so peaceful. So why the peaceful protests from the beginning if they inevitably gonna get shut out. Now left small groups of protesters being chased around.Originally posted by LazerLordz:Yes.
