Singapore - Four foreign banks are suing Asia-Pacific Breweries (APB) to recover 73-million-US dollars in a high-stakes legal battle, news reports said Monday. The Singapore High Court is scheduled to hear how convicted swindler Chia Tech Leng hoodwinked the banks between 1999 and 2003 to finance his high-rolling gambling habit.
The banks plan to contend that Chia's acts were carried out in his capacity as APB's finance manager, and that the company is bound by the terms of the loans to repay the money, The Straits Times said.
The hearing starting Monday has been set for 44 days.
The four banks are Germany's Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank (HVB, the North-European Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB), and two Japanese banks, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and The Fuji Bank, now known as Mizuho Corporate Bank.
Chia, 47, has served three years of a 42-year jail term. He pleaded guilty in 2004 to forgery and cheating.

The problem with many people is that they are constantly looking for a free lunch, and they become fodder for the casino.
The scary part is that people being people, during the times when they are emotionally unstable, with a casino round the corner, they enter and end up in hell.
Sure under normal circumstances, they behave rationally but all it takes is a moment of weakness.
Can you guarantee that you will never suffer from moments of weaknesses?

Gambling has been around for few hundred years in chinese culture. From the very first coolies that came to singapore to today societal forms of gambling like Toto, 4D, etc.
I believe it is part of our chinese culture. We should not fear it, but embrace it

There is a difference, if you have visited my site and read it, between gambling like TOTO, 4D, lottery and casino gambling.
I hope you go when the casino opens and live to tell us your experience... unfortunately most gamblers I meet are liars as well... -
On the legal aspect, those who are bosses or managers, please note.
Acts of the employee are considered as acts of the company.
The company cannot act other than through its directors/employees.
This should be an interesting case. How APB can distance itself from Chia's acts.
The plaintiffs will no doubt claim that he could not have gotten away with it if he was not using his position as FC of APB. They will no doubt claim that the board / auditors were negligent in not discovering the fraud earlier.
APB will no doubt claim that they banks were negligent in trusting Chia so completely.
An interesting case. -

Any form of gambling can be addictive and drives people mad. Why do you have to limit to casino gambling only? Are you trying to jump on the IR bandwagon to make some quick bucks from the sheep in this forums?
