Instead of spending money on all that scholarship schemes for foreigners, why not pay our doctors and everyone else a little bit more for a start? -

If the government is telling Singaporeans to open their arms to the foreigners because of "globalism" , then they have no right calling Singaporeans quitters. Why? They restrict wages to keep Singapore "competitive" , well other countries are offering higher wages to "attract" workers in demand like engineers, doctors and nurses .
Sorry Singapore, your wages cannot compete with the first world countries, that is why I left for Australia. Welcome to globalism. Slapping citizens down in the name of globalism will result in the government getting slapped as well . -
I find it ironic that while there are local doctors who failed to get into the local medical school going overseas to get their medical degrees and returning to Singapore to practice .... and now this opening of flood gates for foreign docs who probably wouldn't have met the requirements for local med schools in the first place, to practice here ....
The government cries out that we are not producing enough doctors, that we do not have enough resources to train enough docs while maintaining standards ...
does it follow ? .....
if it's really about the trade-offs between upholding the standards of medical practice in Singapore, and producing enough docs to meet local needs .... then yes ... I have to agree with OM here ....
if the government spends peanuts ... what choices do you have .... but to let in monkeys ? ....
but yeah ... I am getting ahead of myself here ... unlike many other countries ... where health care and social services are government concerns, our country operates on a "fund yourselves" basis ... makes you wonder where your tax dollars go doesn't it ? .. -
If NUS lowers the standard and accept more students, it may affect NUS's standard but not necessarily medical standards in Singapore. so if local returnees doesn't necessarily have an inferior skillset than locally trained docs, then something is wrong, no ? ... cos for every one that returns, (in any field, not just in medicine), I can imagine 5 others that didn't ... aren't we hemorrhaging talents then ? ... are some of us being short changed simply because we have a pink IC ? ....
it doesn't make sense to me, to sacrifice local talents while opening the flood gates to dubious foreign talents, in any field ...

perhaps we don't need to waste tax dollars in a 4th university .... perhaps we just need to review our foreign talent policy .....
I know of singkies, ex-singkies, quitters if you may ... who have left for greener pastures, simply cos other countries recognize and accept them ... and offered them opportunities that they'll never have in Singapore ....
N-level students, who went onto poly and degrees and masters and then PhDs in engineering at places like Texas A & M and McGill and McMaster ....
air level chaps who got their PhDs overseas and never to return simply because they couldn't meet the requirements for their dream courses in NUS ...
it's ironic that we are hemorrhaging our own people who replacing them with people whom we can see that are often inferior to locals ...
of course, if a local com can pay 2k for a masters holder from burma or bangladesh, why pay 3 for a local bachelors, right ? ... maybe the powers that be should think; if the burmese or bangla in question can earn three times that in Sydney, would he be in Singapore ? ...
you know ... I used to totally support the foreign talent policy ... I still think it's quite necessary ... but if we are opening the flood gates to all and sundry ... at the expense of local talents .... then something is seriously wrong ..... -
So, will the government now do an audit of the staff working in the hospitals to make sure the doctors are from MOH approved universities?
If not, does it mean these doctors who are not from approved universities have to leave?
