Just because the global media are now focusing on Myanmar, the latter has now become another platform for the sheep in this forum to use some white manÂ’s opinion to criticize our government as if they (the whites) are naturally smarter than their own ancestor of different skin colors, and they have now become the most caring community in Singapore. OR should I say NATO community in Singapore??
The problem that the Burmese are facing today is nothing new, those who have traveled to Yangon or Mandalay for business or holiday would have already know that people there are extremely poor and they are deprived of many things in life for many many years. And suppose if Singapore/Asean government or companies didnt provide "aid" or investment to Myanmar, the Burmese will still be living in a world without internet, mobile phone, computers etc and communication with the outside world would be cut off.
After reading so much comments from the wannabe politicians (aka arm chair critics) in this forum, none of these people have actually highlighted the importance of Myanmar to Singapore and the ASEAN region and all they can think about is what the white people are saying about us and speculating that Singapore government is supporting Junta against their own people.
If you havenÂ’t already know, Myanmar is the only ASEAN country that links SE-Asia to the India continent and they are geographically connect to India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand. If Singapore or ASEAN would to isolate Myanmar like North Korea, this will create a lot of instability in the region and it will become a huge trade barrier bAsean and India continent.
Mr. Texas BUSH, Puppet Blair and PM Coward have already made huge mistake in their approach in dealing with Arabs in the Middle East, do you have reasons to believe that white people are more capable than Asians to deal with Asians? Plus have the sheep ever ask themselves how much investment these white countries have in Iraq and Iran prior to the WAR?

its benefit. I guessed it is mutual benefit considering the fact Burma is full of natural resources for ASEAN to invest in oh my goodness, has the investment reached to the people? Thing will worse for Burma but not ASEAN. Just look at the current situation, PM Lee n FM George Yeo alrdy fed up with this junta.
Judging the way they talk, maybe they should consider expelling Burma from the ASEAN membership. -

Political entities depends on sheep for their mass base.
This is a fact.
Whether ruling incumbent or fledging opposition, sheep make up the base of the pyramid.
In this Myanmar situation, the sheep are cashing in on the protest there to cast aspersion on Singapore.
They are victimising the Burmese people further. Whatever the perceived plight of the Singaporean, it is nothing compared to the plight of the Burmese people.
Is CSJ petition gathering at the Myanmar embassy sympthetic to the Burmese cause, or is it to further his own agenda?
Are the conditions in Singapore anything as bad as that in Myanmar?
In international situations such as this, as usually happens again and again, several solutions are offered, several varied calls are made, and never any one of them is instantly effective.
We have to wait, for the international community to do, what they can do, within their jurisdiction.
In the meantime, do not use the Burmese plight for your own ends..

Burma/Myanmar are both correct. Burma has been used internationally for a long time. Myanmar is the formal name used by the Burmese, all that time.
The name change was by the military junta, and was done unilaterally by them, and therefore not recognised by some countries. And they continue to use Burma. But the Myanmar change is recognised by the UN, and so the rest of the world use it. -

Natives along the Indian and Bangla Desh border uses Burma too.

Emotional runs high and it is easy to bring out the obvious military regime and the connection like SG.
For the tittle of TS SG is worst than Myanmar that is totally out of character.
The fact that we are able to express view on the net, at least tell everyone that u r better off. alot of SG have not stay in a Less develop countries and experience poverty or stay in a political unstable countries so they do not understand what are the worst. (personally i have been stop by para military for spot check so at the back of your mind it is always fear of being detained) at least in Sg you don't get stop by Gurkhas.
Before going to Human Rights and military regime, I like to bring up the ethnic connection on Shan fighting for independents, Golden triangle drug trade, Karen faction. And the PRC influence. Have anyone thought about the outcome impact all these elements.
Report has shown the drug trades has decrease from these region.
Asean created a segment to allow alternative negociation with Myanmar rather than allowing PRC direct influence at the security council. The inclusion of so many countries into Asean was to counter the balance of PRC influence.
Let's hope that LHL can delivered.
It took Asean so many years to come up Human Right Charter I believe it derseve a chance to let it work and not kill it. certainly the HR will be by its own standard and evolved slowly rather than fullfill western country "Feel good objective.
lastly i think SG Gov is at odd with its past policy so i do believe some adjustment will be made in view of its role in Asean. -

In another thread 'SG worse than Myanmar', I can't help laughing at the many idiots who agreed. These people should go and stay in Myanmar till the junta give up. In the meantime, they can also tell the Burmese how fortunate they are because SG is worse than Myanmar. It would bring consolations for them. They are already so poor, backward and repressed and to hear stories of how bad SG is compared to their own country will certainly lift their spirits!! -

Perhaps you should have updated your info with a quick reference to Wikipedia, it will reveal that the British had left Burma for more then 50 years, ever since Aung San - the father of Aung Sang Suu Kyi - led Burma to independence in 1948 and became a member of the Commonwealth until his assassination that led to the military coup.
Which history book are you referring to when you make a statetment that - 'The British is directly responsible for the state of Myanmar right now' ?
Even the name Myanmar was not the responsibility of the British who had used the name Burma for more then a hundred years since colonising it in 1886.
If at all, it is the Myanmar's Military Junta that caused the change in the country's name, to seemingly start with a clean slate after years of accentuating the dividing lines amongst the ethnic communities - by using one ethnic group to fight the other ethnic groups that dare to oppose the military junta.
The Myanmar Military Junta has created a huge ethnic problem that will explode to break up the country and destablised the entire region, unless the healing hands of a national figure - in Aung San Suu Kyi - is allowed to heal and unify the ethnic divisions that the military has created.
Burma lacks the political institutions that will allow any form of progressive civil political development and maturity to exist; and Singapore is no different despite the false political environment of democracy, with the image boosted by material progress.
Singapore under the autocratic rule of the POWER OF ONE - is as politically bankrupt as Myanmar is under the military autocrats.
The Burmese will definitely have their spirits lifted to know that despite material progress, Singaporeans remain subjected to the same kind of political regimentation as the Burmese are experiencing despite the ''poverty'' that they are supposed to be suffering.

The Burmese will surely have their spirits lifted to know that they have at least the ability and moral courage to stand up against the brutality of a regime that is willing to use live bullets to suppress them.
Even as Singapore is seen to be wealthy, there are as much poverty that exist in Singapore - material, financial, spiritual, and most of all political poverty.
The majority of Singaporeans will be poor by the time they reached retirement age, as the bulk of their retirement funds will be swallowed up in the over priced properties that the Singapore Autocrats have created with its 'property casino environment', which they have private interest in to keep the property sector buoyantly hot.
Are the Burmese materially poorer than Singaporeans ?
The Burmese enjoy having a wide array of food at their open air markets that are available at prices that are commensurate to their wages, and the Military Junta - like the Singapore Autocrats - have ensured that the stomachs are filled while the minds are dulled.
Yet, despite supposedly ''good'' living conditions by Burmese standards, the Burmese are struggling and opposing a supposedly benevolent Government - that takes as much from the citizens as they are seen to be giving {SG has been providing political lessons to the Burmese junta, as much as China has voluntarily decide to learn about the SG politics of maintaining a One Party State}.
Burma - today - has living conditions similar to Singapore in the 1950s, with the majority of the Burmese being unaware of what life in Singapore is like today. Singaporeans, who have lived through the experience of the 1950s, will know that Singaporeans were not complaining of their conditions then, and even had more then enough to look after a huge family - compared to Singaporeans today struggling to keep a 2-child family despite the huge wage difference from the 1950s.
''Ignorance is bliss'' - and yet, the Burmese has the inspiration to fight for their political rights that has been usurped from them, as much as the few politically concious Singaporeans are also demanding for our political rights to be returned to us.
It was the recent fuel price increases in Myanmar that provided the spark that cause the Burmese to be more vocal, and it was the brutal and morally bankrupt military - which is conscientiously detached from the population - that used brutal and excessive force in suppressing the Burmese demands for change.
The Singapore Police Force are similarly trained in using deadly force as the last option; and despite more then 50 years of non-riots, the Singapore Government has seen fit to purchase crowd control water cannons fitted onto police trucks, as well as an array of riot control devices and soft weapons to be used against Singaporeans.
Suppressing those who will dare to stand-up and be counted for the sake of the country.
Is there any political difference between the scenario of a First World Singapore and a supposedly Third World Myanmar ?

The Myanmar issue cannot be resolved without participation of the military. Such vigorous show of opposition and public protests against the military junta only serves to put the military on the defensive and will result in greater restriction of civil liberties and human rights. George Yeo is right that we understand the political situation there far better than ranting western liberals who are in no mood themselves to send their soldiers into another military conflict in Myanmar. Regime change has not worked...just look at Iraq. It is not in our own political or economic interests to have instability in Myanmar, and economic sanctions for the past decades have not worked an iota.
The way forward is for greater diplomatic dialogue and to persuade the Myanmese military that their interests would be better served by less oppressive rule. -

Put it this way: Burma is not the only country that changed its name after gaining independence. Uganda tried to do that under the military lunacy of Idi Amin who wanted to change Uganda to Uganda Idi but was stopped from doing so by his 'wise' lieutenants who asked: What would the people of Uganda Idi be called?
Thank you for your discourse on Burmese history. What you mentioned I alreadi knew. But what you do not know:
The British granted independence in haste after suffering losses in wars with Germany and Japan. Do not for one moment think that the British was so nice as to hand independence to India, Burma, Straits Settlements, Borneo and the likes. If you read history books by British historians, you will never get to read this piece of truth. When Britain left East India, it did not prepare those countries it granted independence a proper political system. It was left to the leaders of independence 'movements'. So, some leaders are wise, some are otherwise. Right now, in retrospect, we all on hindsight are like Atobe thinking we know better what irks countries like Myanmar.
Atobe said SG and Myanmar have many similarities. If you believed what Atobe claimed, then logically, SG should be even poorer than Myanmar.
As for his other claims, I can only said they hold no water but the rhetorics are interesting vibes for entertaining the Burmese whom if Atobe has a chance to speak at the many forums held recently to express indignation at what the junta is doing, will greatly lift their repressed spirits!
