When CSJ was accepted into the SDP, he has already a strong political platform to question the incumbent government. What better platform can there be for a noob in politics than the SDP in 1979.
Question the incumbent government and put them to task.
Question them and make them accountable.
That is what he always purport to be the aim for his misdemeanour.
He can achieve better democracy for Singapore (the country he love, ?), by getting elected on his own merits, than appointing himself to fight for democracy on behalf of Singaporean. And choose to bellyache about the lack of democracy and opportunities for him (after he destroyed the opportunities available to him).
He is supposed to be a learned gentleman.
He should be able to achieve his perceived aims.
He been at the governments buttocks for more than 20 years.
He could be a greater check and balance guy than CST and LTK combined in Parliament in all that time. He only need to be honest and sincere in his quest.
But alas he is not beyond deceiving and falsehood.

hmm .... while you are right in some respect, you are not totally correct. As far as public knowledge goes, CSJ and SDP have been trying to get into parliament the legitimate way but without success. Whatever the man or party choose to do to get into parliament is another issue. In many countries, political parties are not moral societies - they say all kinds of things and make all kinds of allegations, and promises too. So honesty and sincerity while very noble is not what you can expect from political parties of any colours! Even moral or religious organisations are not as noble as you think.
What CSJ and SDP can do when they get into parliament would be interesting. We already know what the old SDP a-la-ChiamST could do. And so is WP.
