Reasons:
1. Its one of the few things that separates a PR from a Citizen.
2. Its one of the things you get to enjoy compared to non-citizens. Why I say enjoy is because some people feel proud to serve and thus they enjoy.
3. Let new immigrants have chance to also enjoy NS. This wonderful thing must be shared. We must not deprive them.
4. After spending time and energy in NS, you get to compete with foreigners who did not serve NS. That is your advantage. You got NS they no gawd NS. Also, you get the chance to prove you can climb faster on corporate ladder and earn money faster despite slight delay starting career.
See, all the many wonderful reasons to keep NS. I hope all your sons get the chance to enjoy NS. -

somehow i dun tink that our NS stint have an adv over foreigners... the only time when our NS stint comes to adv ish when we guys get a slightly higher starting pay than the ladies in the gahmen sector and climb slightly faster then the ladies if your performance is on par with them... The reasons for NS are more than reasonable. It is the only practical way to have a defence force.
The problem why many feel that it is a form of slavery in disguise is because of two things. The lack of a clearly defined threat and the way it is run.
My korean friends also have to serve NS. But for them, their family treats it as an honour. They tell me they don't look forward to it, but they understand the importance. It does help somewhat that their dear neighbours are run by a madman with nuclear arms.
But this is not to say that as long as there is an importance and clearly defined threat, the people will willingly serve. I have plenty of Taiwanese friends whose parents send them away from Taiwan for long periods of time just so they don't have to serve. I have a friend whose been away for about 7 years without seeing his parents.
Also, the way that NS is run has caused lots of discontent among those who have been through it. The majority of regulars treat NSFs as cheap labour and most of those in command positions just plain can't lead.
Sometimes, they're not to blame. When you have a quota system and you only have that limited resource, the quality that makes it through are going to be lower than when you have a system where by only the top make it through. Then again, for some of them, being chose to lead goes to their head and they end up wielding their power to the extent that it borders abuse.
It doesn't help that the government deals with it through unwritten rules where whistleblowers are stigmatized and all the inadequacy are kept under wraps. -

We serve our part in NS, no matter how big or small our part is. We serve our time in NS because our Father & elder Brothers did the same. We serve because after our ROD. Some other Sons from some other Father will be doing the same for us.....
Do we need a WAR with our Neighbours to make life less mundane for our NSman Would our NSman only feel important if they spent sometime in some War Zone
If our NSman couldn't even be depended on for doing small, everyday mundane things...... How the HELL could we depend on them to do something more

National service is just like insurance...
It does not serve its main purpose if there is no war....
insurance does not serve its main purpose if there is no mishap happen on you...
However, if there is a war, it really depends on what we r fighting for ... Officers worry on the reasons of war... Coz, their life is at stake if their men is not convinced in the action.... -
NS slavery a not, it all boils down to how we view our country.
Are we proud of Singapore? Can we beat our chest and declare loudly to foreign friends that we love being Singaporeans?
In my opinion, pride in one's country is closely linked to the governance of it as well.
How many Malaysian Chinese would stay to defend Malaysia if she were attacked?
How many Taiwanese would stay to defend so that Ah Bian may execute his crazy seperatist ideas? How many want seperation? Going by the last poll, it seems only half.
How many Singaporeans would stay to defend this homeland and after a victorious war, continue having to face ministers who pay themselves millions, relentless increase of public costs, national policies forced down our throats etc etc?
I say at most half .....would willingly pick up arms and fight. The rest would run along with their family or surrender.
Yes, when we protect our country, we also defend our families and friends but at the end of the day, this question also has to be asked: "Who are we defending eventually?"
NS is slavery, albeit a more sphisticated type? That is subjective but in no way any lesser as a proper opinion. -

Yes, you expect us to serve the nation for 2 years. Yes, you expect us to pick up the arms and fight to death in clashes of arms. Yes, you tell us we can't afford armed forces without conscription.
But don't f.u.c.king exploit the people by paying them peanuts a month and expect so much of them. Don't exploit the people by making them do NDP sh.it when it really isn't their duty. Don't belittle the people or cause hurt to their dignity. We are here to do the nation a service - willing or not, so treat us like humans with feelings.
