If our voices were really pertinent to the govt, why
1) raise transport fares
2) raise ministerial salaries
3) force feed the longevity scheme
Are citizens so ignorant and stupid that we have no mind of our own? That only the govt can take charge and not heed our advice? -

I personally think that Singapore should increase the budget on social development because singaporeans are too main stream and we need more diversity in this country. Top of my list will be to invest more money on nuturing local talents in motorsports, contempary/POP music, designs.
Next on my list will be for the government to help grow singaporeans wealth by creating a special "bank" accounts for mid and lower income Singaporeans (no PR). The funds will be managed by the government and pay a interest rate that is similar to the CPF OA, plus no resticition on withdrawal. -
ha the only thing i look forward to budget 2008 is the essay competition. took part last year but only got a commendation book prize. this year gotta aim for the big bounty.
gazelle: i think if the govt adopts a strict utilitarianism approach. in fact, many participants have stressed social development as a key area of expenditure for the govt. but when we look at the salaries of social workers and their plight, i really feel for them as i'm a volunteer myself.

I think social work is suitable for older people above 40 who have to make a career swtch. Remember retirement will be 67. ItÂ’s not physically demanding work but the salary should be at least 2K-2.5K todayÂ’s salary. The course syllabus should be restructured to suit the middle-aged people. Their memory not so good anymore but is compensated with something else.
And don't keep increasing the public servants' pay. Does it occur to them that there are other reasons that compel them to shun the jobs other then salary. -
Raise the salary of the older worker. Redistribution of income to the poor. Heavy taxation on the rich.

Just get them to redistribute the wealth back into
1) health system - Free medical care for pregnant mums, and new born baby till 2 years of age. Free healthcare for families annual income less then 30K.
2) Stop GST for all essential food stuff such as veg, meat, fishes, etc, etc
3) Lower transportation cost or open this sector to international competition.

justcooler: sorry to dampen your suggestions but i think 1) and 2) have been often discussed and the govt will just chucked it away explaining that 1) sg doesnt want to be a welfare state and that there are already many safety nets in terms of medishield etc. in plan and 2) an across the board removal of gst will benefit the rich also which doesnt go in tandem with helping the poor afterall because of lowered tax revenue.
