At least the British get back free health services for their taxes... and if there are hidden taxes, the transparency in the system, the democratic safe-guards would have exposed any dishonorable, public money grabbing behavior by their leaders. -

At least the NHS is free, as compared to our health services, which is severely over priced. Even our hospital room rates when compared to higher grade Hong Kong hospital is a travesty of the word subsidized healthcare.

You know why there are so many articles critisizing the NHS healthcare, because UK is truly democratic, the news media are not subjected to control and print only unbias opinions.
Whereas, in Singapore, you only have our local government controlled media. Do you think our local government controlled media will talk bad about the government?

In the past there were patients who didn't have any cash or money in their CPF and they were refused treatment. Of course our media won't report things like these, they only report the good stuff and censor out the bad. Talk to more heartland folks and you will realised that our healthcare is not entirely desirable. -

This is from an old thread, the exchange rates might be different now, because this was posted in 25th July 2007. Not forgetting the pay of the average Hong Kongers is much higher than Singaporeans, so if they are paying less for their hospital beds under such circumstances, we have been grossly over charged for our hospital beds.
Interesting to note that despite Singapore government's subsidies to the "restructured government hospitals", their rooms charges are still alot more than "Private" Hospitals in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong "Private" Hospital: SGD 87.72 - SGD 107.21 (HKD 450 - HKD 550 per day) [SGD 1.00 = HKD 5.13]
3 bedded room with: electric bed, colour tv, shower, toilet and telephone

They could 'bring out' issue in UK..... but does bringing it out means that ppl waiting for their turn in the NHS suffer any less -
Free is good...... but only if you could 'live' to take your turn. But is our healthcare 'Subsidized'...... it is. I when for a Lap-Band operation 1+years ago.... The hospital show me a price list of how much the whole 'package' cost. A foreginer will pay nearly 10K for the same package I took. A PR will pay 1K more than me. In the end, my total bills comes to $5k+ paying cash of around $3K, the rest by medisave.
It was bloody NTUC insurance that play me out..... when they rejected my claim due to me taking a lower end policy.
Therefoe is our healthcare cheap..... no it not. But the service is good and the doctor & staff took good care of me before and after the Ops. You paid for what you get..... if not happy about the price, you could also be like those UK citizen and go for Ops in Malaysia and India. I do know some S'porean who buy their Monthly med from Malaysia....... -

If you walk along the streets, some company gives you a free umbrella on a rainy day. The umbrella breaks apart half way in the rain. Can you raise an objection with the company? In the laws of contract you have no case because there was no exchange of consideration. If you think you deserve a better quality umbrella, you purchase a better quality umbrella from the stores.
Likewise with the NHS, the healthcare is provided free, if you think that you deserve better service or can't wait, you purchase it from the open market. That's why some chose to go overseas for treatment while others chose to wait in line.
Whereas in the case of Singapore, things are much different. You pay for hospital fees much higher than a Hong Konger would pay in their country and you get crappy service.
A few months ago, one of my family member had to be warded for a minor procedure. There wasn't any beds available, just think about it, I am paying for a service at above average rates (when compared to a Hong Kong Hospital), yet I have to wait 12 hours to be allocated a bed.
