Why oh why knowing S'pore's traffic cost and problems do S'poreans still wants to own a overly expensive car is really really beyond my understanding.....![]()

[b]Motorists concerned over new hike in ERP rates
By Hasnita A Majid, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 30 October 2007 2124 hrs
SINGAPORE: Many motorists are unhappy about the increased Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced another hike in ERP charges on Monday, including one that will cost motorists S$5.
This is the third time that ERP rates are being raised this year.
Drivers said they hope that with the recent increase in petrol prices, the raised charges could be delayed.
The biggest hike will hit those travelling on the Central Expressway (CTE), where rates will hit a high of S$5 after an increase of S$0.50.
Pao Kiew Tee, a motorist, said: "I don't think increasing the ERP is the way to control traffic. The traffic situation doesn't seem to improve. I think they must look at it more fundamentally, look from another point of view instead of increasing ERP."
Harry Soh, another motorist, said: "We are already financing a heavy petrol price right now so any increase in ERP, increases the burden of our so-called livelihood – we don't get a pay increment, but everything else is increasing!"
Some also have suggestions on how to ease the congestion on the roads.
"The COE should go higher, around S$80,000. The traffic is horrible, especially at the CTE and TPE. We must reduce the vehicle volume; there are just too many vehicles on the road," said Oh Boon Song, a taxi driver.
Janet Chee, another motorist, said: "If we can plan our route earlier or leave earlier, maybe it won't be so crowded. I don't know how we are going to expand the roads."
The ERP rate hike will be implemented on 5 November.

It's time these drivers realise that in Singapore, having and driving your own car is a premium luxury. If they can't really afford it, they should just take public transport and stop complaining about the high costs of car ownership and usage.
And if you'd like to know I don't own any car and neither will I ever. I don't even have a driving license, as I think that car ownership in Singapore is just a bottomless pit for your money, and the benefits simply will not outweigh the costs ever.
Therefore, this is a prime example of how the Bear says Singaporeans are making themselves miserable by running the rat race and trying to "one-up" the next person in terms of status and ostentatious consumption.
I really would like you to prove that......Originally posted by HyperFocal:Large portion of Opposition Supporters are living Hand-to-Mouth, & their children are lowly educated because they need to help out their parents... what do you think?![]()

When the whole Election is fully controlled by them, how on earth do you expect ANYONE to say that won the votes through dubious means? Since when, have they ever allowed any questioning by public or any oppositions?Originally posted by hloc:PAP did win 66.6% of the Votes..... that didn't stop U from saying it is false.
Just like I said...... Show prove that most Opps supporter are of low-income and low education level.... as simple as that.
I stay in the public.... I stay in the Heartland (Woodlands)..... I see both rich & poor, High & Low educated ppl vote for both PAP & the Opps.
To say that most Opps supporter are low-income earner and low-educated is wrong....
Please Prove me wrong by showing me some survey done by you, the opps or some NGO that support your statement.....

If people are living hand-to-mouth & are increasingly finding it hard to make a living, would they still vote for a government that says "no one is left behind" but does the exact opposite? And where it written that I need to prove anything to you? Go check it out yourself, they're all out there... I haven't the time to play Who's Wrong Who's Right games...

I have been thinking of what many local have said since the rise of 7% GST, some of the business have been failing n how come at the same timeOriginally posted by soul_rage:Opposition supporters are low-income and low education???
hmm...
I agree with your opinion hloc
My personal opinion is that many of the highly educated are also anti-PAP, because they can read between the lines better than the lower-income or lower-educated people.
Besides, a definition of what is low-income and lowly-education is required.

many commodity such as cooking oil also rise? Is this 7% GST a help to business?![]()
I like to know if US decided to cut interest rate, will it further reduce the price of oil a barrel?Originally posted by the Bear:commodity prices did not go up because of that 7%
and most of all, in businesses, what GST you collect in receipts is paid to IRAS... and what you pay for in GST for your business is refunded by IRAS too...
apart from lower custom from people, there is no effect in the accounting...
and.. commodity prices have gone up because of a lot of factors, one of them is that oil is now US$92 per barrel and lots of staples like soy, wheat, barley and corn has been diverted to producing biofuels...
However, given that many businesses increase their prices very close to the GST period, I wonder if they use that as an excuse to raise prices.Originally posted by the Bear:commodity prices did not go up because of that 7%
