SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has intensified its crackdowns on taxi drivers who commit offences.
It caught 41 taxi drivers committing offences during a four-day operation conducted at popular nightlife areas such as Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and Orchard Towers from October 24 to 27.
Twenty-two of them were found touting; eight had overcharged; the rest had refused to pick up passengers.
Taxi drivers who tout can be fined S$200, and be given five demerit points.
The same penalty is imposed if a driver overcharges his passengers by less than S$20. If the amount exceeds S$20, a S$500 fine will be slapped on the driver and 21 demerit points will be given.
Once the demerit points add up to 21, the offender's vocational licence will be revoked.
For refusing to convey passengers, the penalty is S$100 and three demerit points.
A taxi driver who accumulates six or more demerit points within 24 hours after his first offence will have his licence suspended between two and eight weeks.
LTA said it will be stepping up enforcement operations throughout the week. The hotline for feedback or to report errant taxi drivers is 1800-225-5582. - CNA/ac
