The Singapore Democrats have applied for a license to hold a protest on 19 Nov 07 during the ASEAN Summit (18-22 Nov 07). The application was submitted yesterday.
ASEAN heads of government will be in Singapore for its annual meeting during which it will sign its charter, a full 40 years after its inception.
The charter promises to look into the protection of human rights in ASEAN states.
But the promise already looks very unpromising given the fact the charter will be signed in Singapore, a state that prohibits protests (with the exception, of course, of those aligned with the PAP). In addition, the Singapore Government is the current chair of the regional body.
Nevertheless, it is important that democrats and human rights defenders across the region continue their campaign to impress upon the member states that democracy plays a vital part in the region's development.
As such, the planned protest on 19 Nov, Monday, outside the Shangri-la Hotel where the summit is taking place will be important event.
The protest will also be used to express the Singaporean community's anger at the representatives from Burma. We are determined to show our solidarity with the oppressed people of Burma and continue our call for the military junta to restore peace and democracy in that country.
It will also be a prime opportunity to press ASEAN to take firm action against the pariah regime that has no business participating in the summit.
In light of all this, the SDP calls on the PAP Government not to make a laughing stock of Singapore: You cannot chair ASEAN, sign a charter pledging support on human rights, and then ban a protest at the summit.
The hypocrisy is too glaring, even by PAP's standards. -

There's no more room for selective application in these turbulent times. Your credibility and relevance to the world is dictated by how well you apply yourselves to what you have publicly announced. -

It's a matter of perspective. Sure perhaps from the Instant-Noodle point of view, it may just be a silly song and dance.
But I'm not looking at his jigs, I'm looking for the subtle, unreported reactions and calibrated responses to it. That's what matters.
Don't focus on what he's doing, focus on the impact those jigs have on others that have key interests here. This isn't the Istana lone ranger sit-in, this is ASEAN Summit season. Influence is key, credibility of the grouping is key. ASEAN has to walk the talk or begin to do so. -

Anyway i was just pondering over his wave of protests. Suppose one day the government actually allows protests/demonstrations in Singapore, with permit or otherwise, what would SDP do ?
Surely with a pile of debts(Chee) they are not going to sit back, look for a job and pay his debtors back ? Lets not forget the both the Chees are full-time political activists. They could then be protesting on every other issue. Will it be a monthly affair ? There are heaps of issues to protest about: GRC, Welfare, Annuity, Death Penalty, CPF, Unions, his dimissal, WP, FT, medical fees, transport fees, Singapore Press Holdings, minister salaries, tudung, homosexuality, foreign policy, any other policies, his travel restrictions, his right not to pay fines. Suppose U.S goes to war with Iran he'll need to protest outside U.S embassy, Jakarta hang drug addict he'll need to protest outside Indo embassy so on and so forth.
It'll never end isn't it ?! -

What he has done is to reveal the governmentÂ’s hypocrisies, the inconsistencies, the blind spots and the oversights etc that the public should know.
Many people are still not aware that they have this right and they believe ignorantly that it is not their business to pry into the governmentÂ’s activities.
