That's true.Originally posted by Fatum:I'm not discouraging others ... just painting reality for them ... infact, I am still badgering my parents to drop everything and come over to vancouver to enjoy their golden sunset cos I don't want them around in singapore, where even the living god of the land still "works" into his 80s ... singapore is not a place to retire ....
there are good and bad about every place ... only you can decide for yourself ... listening to all this "my friends says, or my relative says" won't do you much good, seriously ... and honestly, upping roots and trans planting oneself somewhere else is not something everyone can do ... a retired colleague and of my father joined his daughter in vancouver island, a beautiful, beautiful place ... but they returned within a year ... some people just can't part with the dear and the familiar ... before one drops everything and leave, maybe it's a good idea to spend a few years in a non-committed position to look and see ... come over and get a second degree perhaps, or work on a visa for a couple of years, experience the life and culture and society first hand ... every paradise has their snakes, only you can decide if you can live with the snakes or not ...
that's what a halfway decent house in surrey would have cost a few years back .... now it's double that and still climbing ...Originally posted by Quincey:Fatum, which part of Canada are you at? I'm assuming Alberta since you mentioned about property there or was that in relation to our source. Yeah property prices are crazy here man, a two room apartment in East Vancouver (not exactly the nice part) cost round abt close to C$350k.
Surrey is pretty nice ... lots of people live in surrey but commute to vancouver ... but friends there are telling me that surrey is not what it used to be ... the crime rate's climbing up and up ...Originally posted by Quincey:And that's Surrey! I'm sure Lionoisy would love to go there to proof some of his fantastical theories. Yeah, we miss the boat by a mile. The 97 wave just came, saw and conquered. I was speaking to one of my friend's mum the other day, she told me how they actually speculated through the late nineties. In terms of investment acumen, you can never beat the Hkies in their own game.
where do the canada's young and married couples live when property prices are so expensive?Originally posted by Fatum:Surrey is pretty nice ... lots of people live in surrey but commute to vancouver ... but friends there are telling me that surrey is not what it used to be ... the crime rate's climbing up and up ...
most of western canada's property prices are spiking upwards anyways ... even in my little neck of the woods, $750000 properties are not unheard of now ... a little fixer upper for first time house owners would set you back >$300k here also .... and that's just the oil money flowing in from alberta ...
they rent .... basement suites are popular, since they are cheaper than a normal apartment ....... they stay there until the first kid pops out and they have to get a real place of their own ...Originally posted by Daddy!!:where do the canada's young and married couples live when property prices are so expensive?

i think even S$300K is insufficient.Originally posted by Fatum:they rent .... basement suites are popular, since they are cheaper than a normal apartment ....... they stay there until the first kid pops out and they have to get a real place of their own ...
someone who cashes out his CPF and flies into Canada with 300k in cash is, of course, in a very different position from a local chap who starts out making $15, $17 an hour after high school .... with prices so high, so many people are signing up for 40 years mortgages here now ... I had a chance to talk to this PRC chap who's just bought a house for C$480k here ... 40 years mortgage, which basically translates to his entire working life .... he just started working here at 25 after uni ... so in the most conservative terms, he'd finish paying off that house just before retirement .... that kind of shackles, I am not willing to wear ...
because you cannot afford your 8% mortgage, you pull your parents down to join you by selling their flat to pay your mortgage. ugly face.Originally posted by fymk:That's true.
I am happy with Australia and my parents are planning to retire to Australia soon . Taking a vacation back in the old home country is a possibility because it is just 8 hours away from the southeastern states and much cheaper than flying all the way to Canada.
For me , I cannot see myself leaving Australia . It's home now no matter which state I am in. My life, friends and base are here and I am comfortable. Hard work to build a base and I can see why people start feeling homesick after a while especially when it comes to obstacles. Been there done it like so many others who migrated to Australia.
Vancouver I heard is a nice place. With relatives there , it makes things easier but I would not move to Vancouver permanently from a place I call my home already. Maybe one day I might work there for a year and experience the canadian lifestyle but I got a feeling that no matter where I go , I will return to Australia. After all, I still call Australia home ( hahah from Qantas).
Seriously that silly qantas ad was played on the Qantas plane when I was leaving Sydney for Singapore. Looking back , it was like an omen. LOL.

No. I am stating the facts. I see no reason to lie especially when there are a few sgforumners who know me irl. Ged is one of them. Rhonda is one of them.Originally posted by Daddy!!:you are not telling the truth simply because you see a need to defend yourself.
your creditability is now sub-zero like the temperature of canada's winter.

The housing prices in Australia is more or less justified because their average workers are paid 3-4 times our average workers.Originally posted by fymk:The cost of living in Singapore is increasing but the wages are not increasing in line with inflation - that is a fact.
All you can do is make one cryptic statement and leave no explanation. Why? Got something to hide issit?
you dont even have the guts to have children and you still think you are doing well. your parents are sobbing behind your back.Originally posted by fymk:No. I am stating the facts. If my credibility is sub zero - it will be someone who knows me irl that will say something about it.
It is quite obvious that you are a miserable sod who cannot be convinced that someone could do any better if they leave Singapore.

You provide the side on how great Singapore is. Us migrants provide the side on why we moved out of Singapore.
If there are biased views, it will be yours because obviously you have not lived overseas and have to provide newspaper clippings to prove a point.
At least Fatum and Quincey have a right to say something, they are actually living in Canada!
.....Many said they will no longer visit downtown Vancouver late at night or take SkyTrain alone after dark, but 76 per cent say they haven't changed their behaviour because they're worried about organized crime....---http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/story.html?id=0ba5ebec-2476-4084-9b54-6a645173d238
Nineteen people have died in the gunfire this year, including two young men at the Fortune Happiness restaurant in Vancouver on Aug. 9; six men, including two innocent victims, at a Surrey apartment tower Oct. 19; a 45-year-old man in a brazen hit outside his $5-million Shaughnessy mansion Nov. 3; and two men inside a luxury vehicle at 70th and Granville on Nov. 6.
There have also been many reports of non-fatal shootings and bullets flying in neighbourhoods and public hot spots across the region...
