But federal government claims it has answered needs of cities

OTTAWA -- A( C)$123-billion building deficit is putting Canada's water treatment facilities, roads and public infrastructure on the verge of collapse, a new study claims.
The report, released Tuesday by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, suggests the cost of fixing crumbling infrastructure has more than doubled over the past four years, and will continue to rise if no new investments are made.
"Across Canada, municipal infrastructure has reached the breaking point," says the study, written by Saeed Mirza, a McGill University civil engineering professor. "Most was built between the 1950s and 1970s, and much of it is due for replacement...
"The report says that Canada's public infrastructure is at 79 per cent of its service life and that municipal infrastructure has reached its breaking point. It shows that the physical foundation of Canada's cities and communities are near collapse."

Canada is failing to protect the rights of its children in several key areas, according to a report that marks the 18th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The UNICEF Canada study, released Tuesday, says that child poverty remains a persistent problem, mental illness and other serious health problems like obesity are on the rise among children, Canada has one of the highest rates of children in welfare care of all industrialized countries, peer violence and bullying is prevalent, and there is an over-representation of first nations and ethnic minority children in the justice system.
"Compared with other industrialized countries, our children are suffering from unacceptable rates of poverty, obesity, mental illness and violence that have persisted or increased since Canada ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991," said Nigel Fisher, UNICEF Canada president and CEO, in a news release.....

3.anyway,i dunt want to foot the bills for last generation's fault.
western government just to push the debts(like maintaining infrastructures and borrowing money) to next generations.
PAP will not pass the troubles to next generations .They just settle the problems on time and hopefully before they die.
Thats is Chinese calls''Officials like Parents'' or'' Parents official.''
The official treat u like your parents,u know. sons.
It sounds very embrassing.

Regardless of how any government deals with debts, the money's got to come from somewhere in the first place. Where's the PAP's money coming from? Your CPF? Are you paying for future generations instead of past ones?
Geez, you're stupid - then again, that's already a known fact.

Parents - life improved in the early days of Singapore before it hit first world status. Then things got costlier, work got longer and longer. The idea to migrate wasn't mine - was my father's at first and the old man has better foresight than I did . He was correct in saying I would find opportunities I would not find in Singapore. Better to open 2 doors than to get stuck if I have one door open. Two of my relatives went first to Australia and then I made the jump. So yah my family is coming over to Australia because I open the door.Originally posted by lionnoisy:look at the big pictures.
dunt quote these small small things.
ask your grand/parents how their life improved in the past few decades.
If they say no improvement or they are still not happy.
is it the high time u bring them to a better place for them
to spend the golden years...

Doctors who appeared before the inquiry also told horror stories of a "dysfunctional and dirty" hospital where they were forced to use taxis to transfer patients' charts between hospitals because technology was so primitive they could not be sent electronically.--http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/a-dirty-dysfunctional-hospital/2007/11/22/1195321948952.html
SENIOR staff at the state's busiest hospital have threatened to close its doors to women in labour because there are not enough midwives or beds to cope with the baby boom and they fear lives are in danger.--http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/house-full-midwives-warn/2007/11/22/1195321948949.html
Angry midwives at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown wrote to the Herald to complain women were left to labour in chairs because the beds were full, and that they were asked daily to work double shifts to cope with demand.
They said the maternity unit was down 29 midwives, and some staff were working three shifts in a 34-hour period...
"Patient safety is continually compromised Â… bed block is occurring every day. Delivery suite is constantly overcrowded with 14 women in an 11-bed unit and unsafe staffing levels."...

Well said dakkon......bottomline is many of us including myself left for wherever it may be, US, China, Ozzieland or Canada cause of the intangible benefits that you can never find in souless concrete jungle that is little red dot....many of us feel that 4mil(soon to be 6.5mil) cramped onto a small outcrop of the Malayan peninsular is just crazy, like a bunch of ants fighting over limited resources, be it real estate or carpark lots....like we always say, if you can get out, get out....for your own sanity....Originally posted by dakkon_blackblade:I think the problem here is that lionnoisy tends to see quality of life in rather quantitative, materialistic terms. He fails to see that for some people, the unquantifiable qualitative, such as the temperate climate, the everyday graciousness and politeness of the people, and the enjoyment of wide open spaces and great outdoors, are more important than materialistic criteria such as money, crime rate and health care.
In any case, if you really want to talk in materialistic terms, it all comes down to money, which cuts across geographical and national boundaries. If you have enough money, any country in the world can be paradise to you.

Just to put things in perspective of little red dot is really like....PSLE results the end all and be all.......more and more people pumping at gas stations but not paying(yesterday's Newpaper) and lawyer gets convicted for falsifying address just to get daughter into top girl's school..and now she may get kicked out cause of the dad's stupidity. Whatever happened to neighborhood schools. I always say that when kids grow up, its the A graders who will work for the C graders as they are more street smart rather than book smart.

2.There can be 1000 opinions.but only one fact.Originally posted by fymk:Urm assuming that you are not that pea-brain as you appear to be, but do you happen to know the following?
Singapore has a lower infant mortality rate HOWEVER:
Life expectancy at birth in Australia is higher than Singapore.
Healthy life expectancy is also higher in Australia then Singapore
Score card
Singapore 1: Australia 2
...so by virtue of your logic , that makes Australia better?
The raids were part of an ongoing investigation into organised crime syndicates and offences committed recently in WA.
Police said that a number of bikie members would be charged with serious offences.
Police seized a rifle, loaded hand guns, a sawn off shotgun, ammunition, a stun gun, numerous other weapons including swords, motorcycles, prohibited drugs and cash.
