This is a Question.
What say u?
How would you intellectually comment on this statement?
100% Protest of any sort is wrong?
Many types of protest :
1. silent protest. Do nothing , which is something.
2. standing there say nothing and wear a t-shirt.
3. staning there do nothing but hold a placard.
4. etc etc...
even children protest to their parents.
All Protests wrong?
Altho I like to accept this idealogy,
I also like to be challenged intellectually, would it be right to say 100% every kind of Protest is Wrong?
Reminds me of the word 'Opposition'. -
M'sians dare to take part in street protest but S'porean dare not.They are better than us.
But street protests usually don't show good results and they usually end up clashes with the police.
In S'pore, the govt says gathering can only hold indoors.This is an idea the oppoistion party should take up.But perhaps they have finacial problem to rent a place-- maybe not.Why don't they hold protest gathering indooors?Maybe they are doubtful many ppl would attend.
Perhaps we can just have online petition! -

Singapore ppl do not rob Singapore ppl. Msian ppl got the guts to rob Spore ppl and their car in Msia. So since they dare, they are better you say?

With the illegal gathering law around, who is brave enough to protest in public? Even protesting with toys (odex incidence) can lead to 5 police trucks on standby.

Whether something is wrong or right, it depends on your own thinkings. To me, as long as your protests don't disturb people or cause little disturbance, why not?
Another thing - get the point across. Holding protests for so many days and getting nothing done is useless. -

We must always look good, appear peaceful & "transparent", people must be made to fear the "Law", just so the investments keeps pouring in for the good of the government... while we, contend with just scraping by on ever increasing costs....

Legitimate purposes of a demonstration:
1. To publicise their causes
2. Show of strength -- No. of supporters
If the mass media are willing to report the causes,maybe there would be no need to demo.
Orgainsing a petition campain can show the number of supporters they have too.
So there are alternatives to demo. -
What is more powerful? Shaming Burma in public and prodding ASEAN on international news when their PM is in town?
Or hold another panel discussion where everyone has coffee, wonderful scones and nothing is publicised.
Perhaps let's look in between. There's a time for effective closed-door meetings, there's a time for non-traditional ways to prod action to happen. Governments and statist actors would go for the meetings, but Joe Ah Beng are not privileged to attend plenery sessions and quorums, but they are in the public eye.
It's a strategic game.

Huh a protest simply means you disagree with something and want it to change, by itself it is totally neutral how can there be a right or wrong, its simply an open disagreement
BUT if you go about saying all Protests (even silent) are wrong you are also saying voicing out negative opinions are wrong, and that people must obey all authority unquestioningly be it 'authority' telling us to start a war or to give up the rest of our human rights to be moral that doesn't sound right aint it -

But the ultimate reason for them not allowing protest is to avoid potential opposition buildup. They fear, that's why they restraint. -

Show of strength or support
One suggestion is go to speakers corner in Hong Lim park to assemble to show how many ppl the organisers can muster for their causes.But while there,pls be peaceful and disperse if the police tells you to do so. -
there are protest being peaceful, righteous and purposeful. there are example of others whom are incited by hate, carried out in tandem with violence and destruction (someone very smartly said riot).
It is false to say all protests are wrong absolutely, neither is it right to say all protests are right eventhough it is fundamental for humans to be entitled to freedom. -
it won't really work in singapore la. there are too many people who thinks its a waste of time and a big joke. you'd invite mockery rather than build awareness.
the same people who jeer at the uncles for standing up when the ang mo gave the girls a good beating, would jeer the protesters for being extra and having too much free time.
