ST: We can barely stay afloat, say low-income folk

The free market was never capable of providing public goods. That's where the role of a government is required, to be the regulator and make sure people don't fall through the gaps.
This is an activist and interventionist government in the market sphere, but alarmingly lackadaisical and unwilling to be pragmatic in social regulatory spheres. -
i am all for cutting their wages..

If 2% does not help then the only end result of the recent tax changes is the rich gets a tax relief and ends up with more, and the poor still has to pay more to get by.

Bear in mind that this level of taxation is commensurate with the PPP, GDP and purchasing power of that economy as well.
It is not a case of plucking that 30% income tax and 15%VAT and transplanting them in situ into the Singaporean economic context. -
