some people of short tempers...but I don't think my bro would hold it against a PRC...he'd be really pissed off if it was bad service from a local..I remember a time when we went to Swensons...we had to like wait for 2 hours for service!and these were local waiters and waitresses...when we called they just ignored us..who wants to serve 2 kelings eh?money is money but obviously they were picky about where it comes from..so we just got up and leftOriginally posted by udontknowme:errr.....wtf are pple liddis doing in 5 star hotel...??

Can't we be a little more tolerating? Remember our forefathers were also immigrants and could have gone through what the current foreign workers are experiencing now.Originally posted by goldenblaze2710:i AGREE !
i hate to talk to PRC sales...
esp when askin bout products...
ill rather pay a little more and go else where, where better service is provided
You mean they still haven't improved? i stopped patronizing them 10 years ago!Originally posted by Demonight:some people of short tempers...but I don't think my bro would hold it against a PRC...he'd be really pissed off if it was bad service from a local..I remember a time when we went to Swensons...we had to like wait for 2 hours for service!and these were local waiters and waitresses...when we called they just ignored us..who wants to serve 2 kelings eh?money is money but obviously they were picky about where it comes from..so we just got up and left
This instance was a looooong time ago...When I went back to the same outlet, I think 3 years ago, the service was better..but not by muchOriginally posted by pearlie27:You mean they still haven't improved? i stopped patronizing them 10 years ago!
Actually, bad service is not exclusive to PRC workers locals are just as guilty.
I would argue that local service is probably worse.Originally posted by pearlie27:You mean they still haven't improved? i stopped patronizing them 10 years ago!

Like I've said so many times, this nation is not, and must not become a Chinese republic.Originally posted by Dr Who:I am speaking on behalf of non-Chinese Singaporeans.....these Singaporeans now have a problem in their own country!
The majority Chinese must think for the minority and not ignore our own citizens.
I put Non Chinese Singaporeans above the PRC Chinese, although I am Chinese by ethnicity.
Wrong context.Originally posted by gigabyte14:imagine is TS go to a foreign country, like france, and he wants the people there to speak more english so they can be like him![]()
They, local service staff probably has a mentality to work there for a while therefore it is not important to provided good attitude.Originally posted by deathbait:I would argue that local service is probably worse.
why don't you tell us how to say "coke" in chinese since your chinese so powerful?Originally posted by FireIce:i met quite a few who can speak english, and even better than the average singaporean.
mai siao siao ok
u ownself chinese but no know how to speak chinese, u shd be the one diu lian leh........tsk tsk tsk............
These are the elities that singapore are recruiting to boast our economiesOriginally posted by Dr Who:I walked into a coffeeshop and ordered "Coke" from a new PRC assistant
The new PRC worker looked at me blankly as he could not understand what I wanted.
After a while I relunctantly used Mandarin as said "ker-ler" and the guy brought me Pepsi instead!
Of late, I had been served by PRC staff who cannot speak simple English.
If I find communication problems, what more for my fellow non-Chinese Singaporeans?
I therefore propose that everyone, boycott shops which does not have staff that can speak local languages....Singlish, English, Malay, Tamil, Hokkien.......etc.
Why should my fellow non-Chinese Singaporeans suffer at the hands of these foreigners? By all means come to Singapore to work, but please speak my language, and not PRC Mandarin which my fellow non Chinese Singaporeans cannot understand!
I say we should avoid shops that employ non-Singlish speaking staff, and for this to succeed, all Mandarin speaking Singaporeans must co-operate to send a message to the employers!
x2. clap clap clap. Your post is the most sensible reply here so please allow me to quote to highlight some of my views.Originally posted by deathbait:How convenient that you forget one of the major local languages is mandarin. Do you discriminate against locals who cannot speak english? Do you hate anyone who can only speak malay or tamil?
I'm sorry if you're poorly educated or just ill informed. The mandarin taught to the Chinese ppl is the exact same one taught as a COMPULSORY subject to local chinese students.
When you said, "ker ler", it translates to english as COLA, which is, my dear boy, hardly singularly indicative of coke. Handing you a pepsi was not his fault; It was yours. The person who does not understand a local language is YOU, not him.
But let's just do away with anyone who can't speak singlish properly huh? Your grandparents probably can't. Hell, a significant number of singaporeans probably can't talk in your imaginary singlish. It's idiots like you who can't even master their basic mother tongue that take pride in Singlish. If you want to treat it as a separate language, have the guts to admit you don't know english. You can't have it both ways.
It sure is nice carrying your straw man around isn't it.Originally posted by sgdiehard:x2. clap clap clap. Your post is the most sensible reply here so please allow me to quote to highlight some of my views.
Mandarin speaking Chinese have been part of the population of Singapore before its independence!!!
There were Chinese schools and a Chinese university in Singapore before WW2. Chinese High School in Singapore was founded in 1919.
Places cannot be regarded as Chinese outposts, just because the ethnic chinese there speak mandarin, just like places where there are english speaking non-english are not colonies of the great britain, though there are still many people with colonial mentality who regards her majesty the queen their master.![]()
For those who champion a singaporean singapore, be reminded that singapore is a multi lingual multi racial society. If you accept that Singapore is a multi lingual and multi racial society, then take note that Mandarin is one of our four official languages, not hokkian, not cantonese.
If you think you are fighting for the rights of the minorities, let me bring your attention to the minorities who don't speak english. Within the peranakan community, there are those who only speak hokkian and malay, no english. Within the chinese community, there are those "chinese helicopters", who studied in chinese schools and speak mandarin and dialects, no english. The poorer singaporeans, especially the old onese, don't speak english.
when these minorities go to restaurants, will they be served with waiters and waitresses who speak mandarin, malay or tamil? why are the menu not in chinese, malay, or tamil? anybody who think he can shout to get somebody to serve him in his language is expressing his lingual superiority, unfortunately, at the same time, he demonstated his lack of tolerance and his poor unbringing.![]()
As a truely multi lingual multi racial multi religious society, true singaporeans learn to accept differences. Differences are there because not all of us understand a different race, a different religion, and definitely not all the languages. If you cannot tolerate people who can't speak english, migrate! huhh...but even in UK, Australia, American and Canada, there are many immigrants from China....![]()

It is TODAY, not ONE DAY, the people from the Headoffices around the world, much less qualified and less experienced than many of us, are here taking over our jobs. Realise how many expatriates are in Singapore? understand why the rentals are rising in Singapore?Originally posted by Dr Who:One day. the PRC guy will take your job.....because he is better than you in all areas.....
One day soon, being a citizen will have no more meaning when you are treated like a global digit.........use and throw away.......and you are replaced by cheaper better PRC worker....
Good Luck....
Your children will serve the PRC temporary resident.
think I am joking? Think again!

I think those who cannot pass off as Chinese don't face the same problem. One of my lunch kakis is Indian-Chinese, looks very Indian and speaks fluent Mandarin. Before she opens her mouth, the hawkers always ask her in English what her order is. Another colleague of mine is just like me, non-Chinese but Chinese looking. Both of us face difficulty communicating with the PRC workers. Some even make fun of us saying things like "Chinese and yet can't speak Chinese". When we say we are not Chinese, they give us a look like "Right and I'm bleedy LKY!". Sometimes we purposely order from the same stall as our Indian-Chinese colleague. The same person who can speak English to our friend pretends he can only speak Mandarin to us??!Originally posted by Dr Who:Not that I cannot speak Chinese...... I definately can if I want to
But for the sake of the Non-Chinese Singaporeans, we must be united and not succumb to speaking Mandarin simply because the PRC worker cannot speak English..... we must not encourage the employers who seek greater profits by employing these foreigners.....cheap labour......soon Singaporean uncle/aunty will not be able to work at McDonalds if cheap labour keep coming.......
I share the exclaimation "alamak", but why is a Malay stall manned by PRC?" Since when the PRC learned to cook nasi padang good enough to sell? or why do the store owner, a malay, a peranakan or a local chinese employs a PRC to face the customers? shock? yes, surpriseed? yes, pain? why?Originally posted by adetet:She turned to me and said "alamak, now even malay stall manned by PRC!". I know exactly what she means and boy do I share the pain!
