Is there a alternative to NS?

I think practically speaking, NS Is a necessary evil, but if ask u to come up with alternative what do u suggest?
I suggest we pay a defense tax or use the defence budget hire those indonesia or what soldiers employed by british army also.
I know there are alot of parents out there who will be willing to pay a few hundred dollar yearly tax for this purpose if it means shorter or no ns.
Bascially hire soldiers instead of civliian soldiers. I know the cons of this apporach so don't lecture me on this.
So with this added number, maybe can reduce NS term to one year someday in the future. Two years is two long(pun intended)

NS is okay in my opinion.
But two years is too long a period.
I think the best is one and a half years.
According to wiki, Singapore's number of active troops is about 60,500.
Is this level of active troops necessary?
Countries with bigger populations have less troops than us.
This is a typical kiasu attitude.
If the period of NS is reduced to one and a half years, the level of active troops will drop.
The question here is how many active troops does Singapore need in peace time?
Active troops in Asean:

Myanmar - 428,250
Indonesia - 400,000
Thailand - 306,600
Cambodia - 124,300

Malaysia - 110,000

Scared of foreign talent robbing you of your job during your NS? Well, those foreign talent don't know what their missing.
What is so scary/bad about NS? As long as you a good attitude, you won't have problems anywhere. It's the same for NS.
Take NS and enjoy it to the fullest, really. You'll find it a rather fulfilling experience. -
It doesnt matter whether there are countries with more population but lesser troops then us.
Its about where the threat is coming from. -
if you hire soldiers from country X, and if we have a war with country X, which side do you think the soldiers is at?

Employers hire foreigners because no Singaporeans want the jobs, no Singaporeans can do the jobs, or foreigners are much cheaper, nothing to do with reservist obligation. when foreigners are cheaper, they employ foreigners, when operation is cheaper in indonesia, they move to indonesia; later they found it cheaper to operate in Vietnam, they move again. You locals got job or no job, it is your problem. Why we never hear any blame on the employers, especially the MNC??

Yes, get the PAP to employ foreigners and pay them well to do NS and serve the country. Like the PAP said pay them well to avoid corruption, so if PAP pays foreigners well I believe they will stay and do a good job.

then future procurements wouldnt be as vast as now too cos govt need to think about paying the soldiers too...

how much does it cost to run 1 camp full of professional soldiers..inc maintenance of equipment.... food...things liddat
