I remember not too long ago our elites and our leaders keep telling us that life sciences is the way to go. Biotech is the future. Blah Blah blah...
Pump so much money into it. Tell our students to study it till so many got conned into taking up bio courses at poly and uni.
Yesterday news report that pharmaceutical industry is down AGAIN - by 33%
Looks like another gamble by the govt gone wrong.
reminds me of the late 1990s when govt tell our students to study IT. then IT went bust with so many ppl losing their jobs, with all the Indians coming in to work as IT "professionals" -
I am still going into Life Science when I graduate, no matter what.

Don't mention it. My gf got conned into taking this major when it was at its beginning stages, with regrets till now.
But never mind, I will earn enough to support her

Well I am working at biopolis now. Think the govt is still pouring millions of dollars into research, fruitful or otherwise. Tonnes of yellow biohazard bags are generated everyday. Just pray that there will some result someday.

i heard it is hard in bio sector. govt pump in, students have to get very high qualification thru upgrading(degree then master and more, i am not sure).
but then, the success to be reap will be great. maybe someone can tell me if i should continue on studying biology at higher level. -
good thing that singapore is investing in research and biotech is relatively young. when nearly half the world has grey hair, biotech would be a highly profitable investment if singaporeans could "break through" with inventions. -
Hello, this is not business. You won't see results immediately. Whoever thinks so, can just kill yourself.
Biotechnology and Life Sciences is a lot of research, and achieving breakthroughs are tough. Each and every research, no matter how unimportant, often reveals something or will provide help to another research.
If you are so great, go be one and try.

A lot of jobs are created for life sciences. Unfortunately, a lot MORE students took up life sciences.
Some statistic which i took time to count: Looking at Second Upper only
No of 2nd class upper grad in NUS 2005(Science): 158
Life Science students with 2nd class upper: 92
Chemistry: 25
Physics: 11
Applied Maths: 11
Maths: 5
Statistics: 5
Others (Microbiology, Maths with management science, biochemistry): 9
Science graduates 2005
1st class: 38
2nd class upper: 158
2nd class lower: 107
Pass with merit: 255
Pass: 304
Total no of Science graduates 2005: 862 -
Wah, like that, next time going to eat grass liao.
me still got 1.5 yr to grad from oversea P/T degree in biomedical science.
Frm what our elite style, if i pump in $$$ in research , i must get $$$ out. (AKA must bao jia everytime ) but come to think of it, how research can bao jia? -
I really dont think singapore has much of a chance of success in this arena. and singaporeans or chinese for that matter (all other orientals too) are not quite innovative if you know what I mean.
in the long run, let's say 2 or 3 decades from now, I dont fancy the chance of singapore surviving or doing very well. It's all about neighbours catching up excelling and dominating the region. Singapore will at beest be marginal player.
No offence to singaporeans. that was a realistic prediction of future. -

With India and China having more people and technology moving ahead, if we don't have a head start, we will surely lose out. Such investment is pratical. The only thing is instead of just waiting on MNC to come here is to have a jointly investment and research to keep the business here in the future.
Investment like renaming "Marina Bay" deserved to be kicked in the groin -
This phenomenon will keep repeating itself here every few years.
The next big thing, according to the government, are the coming casinoes.
Yes, already you see tons and tons of people lining up for those limited jobs at the IR.

wah, pay the elite so much n yet kanna play out?
Frm frds doing master in local uni, their response for this field is not good.
say go oversea, better prospect. say the top lvl ppl normally foreigners. then almost local ppl in research is in low level.
Wanna go top, go out and drink some oversea ink then ppl will consider put u to top lvl.
what elite had pushed.
1) electronics (good response that last for more than 10 over yrs but now...
2) IT ( last 2-3 yrs then flood with foreign talent)
3) biomed/pharmac ( still struggling but once funding stopped, maybe MNC will pull out?)
4) tourism ( yet to see, but wat type of entertainment can SG provide, other than can walk safely outside without being mugged.) -
