How can you be patriotic to a nation like Singapore?

  I just got the game Mass Effect. It's about Human kinds expansion into the Galaxy. There was an international space docking station called "Singapore". And it reminded me of the nation Singapore.
  
  Isnt that what Singapore is? An island that the British Empire made into a docking station for their ship? Like a store at the air port?
