How much do we know about Gurkha police in Singapore?

and I think we use them as "expendable" assets sometimes ... like that tekong robbers case .... i don't think it was so much that they had superior jungle tracking skills than that they were sent into the most dangerous areas ... it wouldn't look too good for sonny in the army to be shot by some indo robbers with a rusty revolver eh ...
plus there are still plenty of security situations where they are useful .. like guarding embassies of certain countries, the UK, oz, the US, Israel ... it's just as much as making us at ease as them also ....
And somemore these chaps have a difficult time anywhere also ... they are allowed to go for upgrading courses at night, my father has taught them NTC courses before, but it's very very difficult for them to get a PR here, or anywhere else for that matter, not HK, not the UK also ... so after a life of service in some foreign land they have to retire to some thirdworld mountain side with no electricity at night ...... -

The observation that army generals are shuffled to prevent a military coup is very insightful. I have no doubt it is the correct one. Not sure if there is an incentive seeing how we don't have natural resources to steal and sell.
I think the fear that the Gurkhas may be or become a private army is valid. However I wonder if there are enough of them to qualify and isn't there a concern that they may be the ones conducting the coup? (reputation for loyalty aside).
I tend to see them as third party bodyguards, without local affliations, rigorously trained, rotated regularly, closely monitored, long hours with little or no private/social life. ie The kind of life even us hard working singaporean citizens would not put up with.
I also hate to point this out but if the government was attacked by a foreign terrorist group, fewer citizens will die in the initial attack. That sounds pretty cold and I don't mean to cheapen the Gurkha's lives but still, something to consider:
Fewer citizens dead = less hostility to the attackers = more room for diplomacy.
And no, I don't know how much they are paid.

they'll be taking orders from some yank admiral in a carrier speeding over. and when the dust settles, they'll have a base here, and will start poking around some indon gas reserve. -
yes, that is true.. they live in their own community and are discouraged (practically disallowed) from fraternizing with the local community.
they are mainly asked to return to back to their home country.
in fact, there is a UK body set up to take care of these gurkhas. apparently, the amount they are paid does not necessarily take care of their future requirements after retirement.
if i am not mistaken, they are forced to retire a relatively young age. so those junior soldiers would barely get to make ends meet after retirement. -

Feeding the entire gurka family is a hell lot cheaper then feeding your big mouth. if you think they standing there do nothing but guarding - then ask your grandmother to go stand there, we pay her instead.

although the TS is alarmed for no good reasons, there is some truth in the employment of gurkhas.
it stems from a systematic fear of the local races' inability to be objective in the times of crisis. -

i respect them... i have worked with them b4 during big duties and singaporeans are the ones complaining... for them... they just grin n bear with it... those marathon... they can outpace singaporeans by dunno how many lengths and win it... they are extremely fit n loyal... and very friendly... a gurkha 7 years in the force with a coporal rank will just greet a normal police force sgt as Sir when they see them...

I heard that they had to walk bare footed and carry a large basket of stones over rocky terrain as a part of their selection process even their families and village would feel very honored & grateful when they are selected to serve.I see a lot of fit looking Gurkhas doing security guard jobs in JB but I dont think they are from the same lot of men.Maybe Singapore dont need Ghurkas around cuz every able bodied man is so 'trained ' & gungho now but these are good people to have around so what is there to complain?
