The main difference between Malaysia and Singapore is (a) in 6 to 10 years, the dependency ratio of Malaysia would be a lot better than Singapore's. From this perspective, Malaysia is a lot stronger than Singapore. The only way to "rescue" the situation is to allow more young people into Singapore. Thats why you see only young foreigners in Singapore. (b) Malaysia has a lot more natural resources. Since they are used to kampong life style all these years, they survive better during recessions simply because they are more "detached" from the rest of the world. Many of them probably dont know how to take bank loans! On the other hand, Singapore, being a barren rock, has no choice but to integrate globally.
