Civilian plane was no defence threat: M'sia
PETALING JAYA, Malaysia: The civilian plane which flew by Kota Baru and caused the shutdown of Singapore's commercial airspace for 50 minutes on Tuesday, was no threat to Malaysia's defence.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said that was the reason the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) had allowed the plane from the Thai resort island of Koh Samui to enter Malaysian airspace.
"It was just a small plane and we had confirmed that it was no threat to the country's defence," he said after attending the memorial service of Prof Dr Wolfgang Franke here on Saturday.
He said the DCA immediately informed its Singaporean counterpart after getting information from the Thai DCA that the plane was having some problems and needed to be repaired in the island-nation.
It was reported that Singapore scrambled two F-16 fighters to intercept the aircraft, which was illegally heading towards the city-state's airspace.
The incident caused disruption of flights in and out of Changi after it sparked a major security alert. -

A small plane loaded with explosives probably isn't enough to cause any of our buildings to collapse but it would still make an extremely spectacular fireball if it crashed into any of our tall buildings in the CBD.
Do the Malaysians even have the capability to intercept the plane?
Anyway, what the Malaysians are saying is that there are no important targets in South Malaysia worth defending. -

Frankly the civilian plane should have radioed Singapore when it entered Singapore's airspace. Can't be too careful nowadays. -
You don't need a 747 to create pandemonium these days. A small Cessna plane is enough for a signature terrorist attack on civilian assets.
The defenders are always at a disadvantage. You have to be vigilant at all times to ensure nothing catastrophic happens. But it just takes one small error to suffer all the blame. -

I would much prefer the latter - over reaction. Better than hearing bad news later.

it doesn't need to be a nuke or missile to crush our image of being a safe country. a small home made bomb going off at any hdb areas is enough to scare the wits out of everyone in singapore and lose the world's confidence in Singapore has build all these years

I assume if it was two camel humpers on the plane instead of two blur aussies ... and they managed to crash the plane into the pan pacific .... the TS will be complaining about our lax air defenses ? ....

small plane does not create as much destruction as a jet plane..
But if the small plane carry tons of TNT... WooHoo..

There are things we can complain about like government policies but a country's defence being overvigilant, you can't complain about because of how the world is.
Prevention is always better than cure.
