i just saw a discussions between the management and the union leaders, really impressed by the latter's stand in fighting for the benefits and rights of the average workers here..
so, are the worker unions in sg doing their jobs serving the tens of thousands employees in SG? is MOM a pro-employer or a pro-employee govt entity? your thoughts please...
oh!Good !
where are u now?Aussie?
Union leaders in SG sit shoulder to shoulder with LHL,
GCT and LKY etc,
He is Cabinet members---Lin Swee Say etc
no other country Unions members sit in Cabinet
,even PRC!!
Well i've never seen the discussions you are talking about so i can't draw my own conclusions.....
But assuming they are doing their job and put up an effective stand during such discussions, the big question remains if it is effectively affecting Singaporeans at the ground level? And if it isn't why? Govt policies? Employers relocating?
P.S. link the discussion i'd like to read it ![]()

I assume u refer to my post.
1.Labour union in SG represented by NTUC.Dunt think people in SG have been and are still highly controlled by ISD and secret police. No one know better than LKY the power of labour union. He was a young and voluntairly legal adviser to then unions in 1950's ,carring a rare double honours in Laws fr Cambridge or Oxford!!He came to power with the aids of unions to a great extend.Unions leaders and members were and are still human beings. They will crash with political leaders if their live suffer.
2.who say Union in SG is powerless? In 1980's,SIA Pilot Union was so strong that LKY had to come out and said he would wind up SIA if the pilots did not return to negotiating table.
Then u know the famous SIA union leader ,who was SG PR from Malaysi, whose PR status was cancelled. Ryan Goh Yew Hock,is a Malaysian.

3.NTUC Fairprice Supermarket etc help to stabalize prices in SG.
U ask how HK people feel about the two Super market chains in HK_------Park N Shop and Welcome, run by greedy owners!Ask Malaysians why they always short of important foods stuff near CNY,but not near other festivals!!
NTUC has a political duty to make SG people happy.LKY and their old and new gurads know SG citizens are human.
Like Chinese saying go,''Water can hold ships, also can flip the ships!!''
We are not prisioners of Singapore Prision ,nor patients of SG hospital!!
The little red dot passport and the eduaction can help us migrate anywhere easily, anytime and anywhere.Quota for Singaporean or ambassy in SG always open.

No ar sorry for not being specific, I'm asking TS to link the discussion cause I never read it so can't draw my own conclusions ... and i know little about the unions in SG so I'm here more to listen than voice my thoughts.
I don't know much about this either.
Only that NTUC is now a supermarket business.
I think they have branched out into running clubhouses, chalets and a golfcourse?
I don't think I've heard any comments from them on CPF, GST or Medisave increase or means testing for hospital subsidies.
Among the tasks of the unions are enticing members to spend and spend with lures of discounts, savings and rebates, comprehensive insurance coverage and other blah blah blah.
The unions forge close ties with employers. When the job seekers approach the unions for assistance, it encourages job seekers to help themselves.

that puts a different light on the unions....
It seems to me that NTUC is taking a difference stance to worker representation.
Rather then actually negotiating benefits directly with the employers, it seeks to take on the burden of the employers and create benefits though helping members make the most of their money, eg, Insurance, supermarkets, clubs etc.
That doesn't seem in line with the role of unions to make employers more considerate and responsible for their workers. However, it is in line with the role of unions to create benefits for the workers.
This type of policy doesn't encourage employers to consider their workers in their policy making, rather it encourages employers to take advantage of their workers until they are forced to stop. The harder NTUC works to keep employees happy, the more employers can get away with.
Seems to me like NTUC may be fighting a losing battle.
What kind of unions you want? Western-style kind? Got pros and cons.

Workers are also stakeholders in the economy, without workers where get bosses? given that NTUC took the initiatives to leverage the living standard of workers here thru membership clubs, rebates and other fringe benefits, does not bother even the employers concern, in fact, employers are happy that NTUC provided the platform for workers to upper their standard of living, longlife education, skill and re skilling, so as to help the employers in their productivity. When workers are happy, productivity increase, bosses become happy, paid their taxes and expand their investment and production resulting in more jobs created, this in turn make the govt happy to pursue the support for NTUC initiatives. This is call social economy. When 3 parties are in a all wins situation, the country growth and all gained. No country in this world can follow this kind of good tripartism in Singapore, a niche to beat all competition, it is say that it is an envious and jealous of many countries who never understand how this model work.
Fight for bonus and all that the union leaders will help. If you join union in Singapore, does not mean that if you have any problem with your employers union will step in to help. For certain level of staff though they are allowed to join union but when they are faced with problems from employers, union made it clear that they will not help. So all they do is collect money money money and what for join union when they can't help. They only help the rank and file but of course with guidelines from PAP. All unions are controlled by PAP in Singapore, so how far do you think unions will go all the way to help the members? I said all these based on my discussion with one of the union leaders.
