Hello here I am Soh Yean Pheng 38 technician, out of IT job 2007 for more than a year. Yes I did a few short employment 1mths plus 3mths still consider employed?![]()
Answering your question: Depends on how you staggered the employment periods over the year.
Why out of job? Cannot find or? I've a cousin, finished with a so-so poly degree, just finished NS. Came out, within a month plus can find a job, IT related, and technician. He's currently 22 years old.
Another Army friend (now 28 yrs old), also with a poly degree, came out and got employed in an IT company, last year he changed company without much fuss, this year Jan got promoted.
Another Army buddy, with NITEC cert, got employed right after army, till now still employed.
And another army sergeant, went Aussie to study a Biochem uni degree for 3 years, came back go back to sign on in the army (God knows why).
Sometimes I really wonder why, most of the people I know could find jobs quite fast, and stay on quite long.... There are also recently some career fairs => means companies are still looking for workers... Yet people here keep claiming that many of the so called "lowly-educated" cannot find jobs...

Army sign ons are for the money, I would think.
The issues with FT are usually undercutting of salary by foreigners or they sit on top of you when they cannot do the job yet they can command a higher salary .

all your friends are young and in their prime.
not for those in my categories and profession. one of my friend in his 50s that did mainframe programming was retrenched from his job, sold biscuits and cakes to provision shops, and now happily employed in a school as an IT administrator.
another chap in his 50s, lost his job, and converted to freelance auditing job.
these are battle hardened folks that have endured 3 recessions in SG... but as they age, they cant help to feel the uneasiness of unemployment looming not very far when they hit 60 of 70s.
I do not know if I am too old to do IT at the age of 38, I feel that people do not want me.![]()
I do not have Dig and no CCNA or MCSE. I am more on hardware in this line for more than 10 years, is there any thing wrong doing the same thing for 10 years?![]()
let's see 10 years ago
OS is win 98
RAM is SDRAM
now
OS is win vista
RAM is moving to DDRIII
so much has changed
1st and foremost,
I am not saying that I disbelieve the employment report.
But I still need to challenge you white clowns the following.
What do you really understand about employment figures?
When its said 100 jobs created, what do you understand by this? Just the fact that 100 jobs were created in the PORE for all that exist in the pore, foreigners, legal or illegal, FTs, LTs, no Ts, parttime, fulltime, 1 person 3 jobs?
I dare to challenge you how much you understand about these figures.
come, 'release your horses, come to me'.
Calling all white clowns.
You are few months late to believe or disbelieve. A lot has changed.
I'm predicting that the next economic bull run will be near the end of 2009. Need to start saving up and earning extra income sources to prepare for investment opportunities.
Btw, there are a few ways to earn passive income using IT, you just have to know how... Already spent some exam study time and sleep time considering the possibilities... Going to embark on 2 to 3 of such projects of different content right after exams to try it... b_e_c, if successful I share with you hor, since you are also from IT... I won't be selfish one.
Then again, perhaps you should also spend some of your abundant energy on doing research into such areas yourself.

not too late. the key is to stay positive. keep your feet firmly on the ground in terms of expenses and life's maintainence. cast your net wide; call up friends, check back with ex-colleagues once in a while for job openings, approach recruitment companies. often job openings are secured through word of mouth. advertisements are already too late when you see one. and catch up on your hobbies or personal work neglected in the past. negativity will do you in. so, stay up.
you will get there. i have seen some of my older friends digging themselves out through preserverance. and they are in their 40s.
i have no problem securing a job.
sometimes maybe due to market conditions, no job openings. i dry for few months. but i prove my market value worthiness everytime by securing another job due to my skillset which is rare in the pore.
then again, the pore does not have enough job for my kind of skills.
seng shao , zou geng shao.
this words were told to me by my friend.
IT is diverse. the pore is tiny super little market.
with influx, this is magnified many many many times.
influx is about new, young, cheaper, endless supply for a limited demand. this is logically the problem.
with proper management of the situation, this is no problem.
over supply lowers the market value.
as one ages, you find your salary as IT person has hit the ceiling.
I always preach to youngsters about what to expect if they go into IT. Why so few locals into IT ? they are smarter than me, they have moved on to other fields like sales and management.
Oxford Mushroom quite retarded ah.. don't even understand what we talking about.. In his mind Foreign Talent = bangla construction workers and domestic maids and road sweepers nia..

I give you a hint on how you can leverage on your IT skills if you tried, without even competing in the job market.
Look at SgForums.

for fear for my life.
u know i cannot tell.
i am too neutral as the press.
PAP propoganda dogs are also employed. So are the police as well as the minster in charge of MSK as well since there is no report on how many and whose heads actually rolled. So no problem as long as the island corporation can afford to pay these people.
