I know that Singapore population is going to increase to about 5. to 5.5m (according to MM Lee's recent comment). I believe these figure does not include Malaysians commuting to Singapore to work every morning and the tourists staying over in Singapore.
So my question is, if Singapore tourist arrival reach 17m, Sngapore population reach 5.5m, can land scare Singapore cope?
huat ar
I think it was more an economic observations.
Probably along the lines of using a rule of thumb that a labor force of x numbers can create a GDP of y dollars and we foresee that Singapore's economy is growing at z dollars a year. We assume that in the year qqqq we'd be creating z+ dollars which means we should anticipate needing x+ workforce at that time.
Assuming we're not able to reproduce x+ citizens by qqqq year who are ready to enter the workforce, we'll need to make up the difference with foreign labor so we start to attract them now.
The problem is that economic policies clash with other types of policies all the time. Notwithstanding that applying free market theories in a regulated market usually creates lots of interesting problems too.
I think our government needs help from a talented economist who is willing to spend time studying our country and help shape policy.
The target is to reach 6.5m by 2030-2040 (can't remember the exact details). As to where to house the incremental increase in population, your guess is as good as mine. What is more disturbing is how they are going to achieve this goal. Singapore's fertility rate is around 1.2, meaning we are not having enough babies to replace ourselves. Thus, the main component of the targetted increase would be immigrants or what the pappies like to call foreign talent.
Thats right ladies & gentleman, very soon indigenous Singaporeans would be a rare commodity
Indigenous Singaporeans were the Malaysians.
australians are mostly english, greek, italian, while americans are mostly irish, germans, italians, latino, african etc.
I dont see that as an issue as long as Singaporeans are still running this country.
zzz i think sg got too many people.... orchard road now so crowded!! zomg! haha

spend some time to walk around the cbd of melbourne and sydney first. half the population there are with black hair.
sunnybank is practically a huge chinese suburb there. they even publish several newspapers in mandarin and have cable tv with all HK and taiwan programs.
i thought the Lees are running the country. since when the citizens have a say in how Singapore should be managed.
i rather live under the umbrella of white man with freedom and dignity, then to be a sacrificial pawn in a game run by some autocratic leader in a banana republic.

Are these "black" hair australians foreign born?
If a tourist take a walk along Singapore little India, do you expect him to say that in Singapore 90% are indians?
