Citigroup says Singapore "fairy tale" reaches end

Singapore's budget targets lower- and middle-income households - and disappoints on income tax - as the government grapples with rising prices and the U.S. economy slows, Citigroup Inc. said in a report.
"The fairy tale economy of high growth and low inflation of the past two years has come to an end,'' Kit Wei Zheng, chief economist for Singapore and Malaysia, wrote in the report today.
The chart of the day shows Singapore's economic growth (in red) against the cost of food (in white). Gross domestic product in the October-December period contracted for the first time in 18 quarters. The city-state of 4.6 million people imports about 90 percent of its food, according to the government.
The budget also provides "massive increases'' in spending on subway and road projects, helping construction companies, the report said. A "key disappointment was the lack of a cut in personal income taxes,'' with a one-time 20 percent tax rebate, the report said.
Still, the government will provide "generous handouts,'' including rebates, payments to the national pension fund, and subsidies for adult education.
Singapore's Finance Ministry unveiled the estimated S$37.5 billion ($26.6 billion) budget on Feb. 15. The day before, the growth forecast was lowered by half a percentage point, to a range of 4 percent to 6 percent for 2008. The outlook for inflation was raised by a full point, to between 4.5 percent and 5.5 percent. The government singled out higher costs as a concern.
"There was still a little of something for everyone,'' the Citigroup report said. "Perhaps more could have been done to help businesses to deal with rising costs.''
Much of the increased spending for businesses was in the form of tax incentives on research and development investment in Singapore, the report said. The budget is "fairly generous and expansionary.'' Singapore will boost spending 12.5 percent in the financial year starting April 1.
... I think a great fall is inevitable & past overdue in SG, which I knew from 5 years ago & instinctively decided to pack up, take my life & business elsewhere...
... SG's economy reminds me of the Titanic Tragedy...only difference here, is that the lifeboats are reserved only for the so called "leaders"...
... well, like the locked thread titled LHL asking how is PM Lee going to avoid another recession; I won't be surprised if GST gets hiked up further to (9%-10%) - this time to help the economy...

You talk about your prediction for the GREAT FALL, I am asking how great is great?
You talk about moving your business overseas, I am asking where did you move your business to.
Is that what your call personal questions?

That's very personal. What has his business strategy got to do with you? You mean you want him to announce in public so that everyone can copy?

I didnt know you can learn about somone's business strategy just by asking where he shift his business to.
In the first place, I am not even interested to know what business is he doing...:D

It is possible. It is also possible to learn about business strategies just by noticing where people place their shops too. There are many things one can pick up by just observing subtle things, and that includes where people shift their businesses. Hope you did learn something new now.

You sound like you are still living in the the historical age where information is power.
If you say it is possible, let me ask you, suppose if he tells you that heshifted his business to Vietnam without telling you what kind of business he is dealing and why he has shifted, Can you tell me what is his business strategy and something new that the business community doesnt know about Vietnam.
Hope to learn something from you.

From your first sentence, you mean information is not power now?
And how sure are you no competitors know that Hyperfocal is the owner of that business? Are you absolutely sure?

Controlling information to gain power is an old thinking which doesnt apply in this modern internet age.
If Hyperfocal is so concern about keeping it secret, he should not be spending so much time in this forum talking about how he predicting a great fall and shifting his business overseas.
You have not answer my question regarding Vietnam.

The main question back to you: How is personal information related to information from the internet. No link.
"Controlling information to gain power is an old thinking which doesnt apply in this modern internet age." => Please think before shooting. So you are to say again that all information can be gained from the internet? Do you mean that no information can be hidden from the internet? I would like to see you try. I give you an example: suppose you are opening a retail shop, do you think you can find out the best suppliers around just by using the internet alone? Please try. There are still a lot of information around that are not simply just released. From a single move alone, there are many things you can analyse. It is just like playing chess; you can read the opponent's mind.
Regarding the question about Vietnam, you have not answered the more burning question of
And how sure are you no competitors know that Hyperfocal is the owner of that business? Are you absolutely sure?
I have lots to say, but I don't see any necessity on teaching someone who isn't interested in economics at all why Vietnam could be a good place to invest into.
At least HyperFocal acknowledges that Singapore economy is like the Titanic, but he had thought that soon it would hit something and encounter the "great fall", so he packed up and left 5 years ago. Whether he is on another ship in the ocean or already landed is not important, what is important is his prediction of the "sinking of the Titanic" had not happended, "past overdue".
But why is he so interested in the sinking of the Singapore economy? Why is there such passion to see MV Singapore sink?
The world is big enough for everybody to stand, as long as you are not sinking, why looking for other ship to sink. if you want to see sinking ship, buy the "Titanic" DVD.![]()

My questions are related to what you have said about your prediction of a GREAT fall in Singapore economy and your foresight of shifting your business overseas.
Q : How GREAT is great?
Q : Where did you shift your business to?

... and my answer will still be the same: Classified PERSONAL... how great that impending fall will be, I'd love to leave it for all you whities to eventually realize..
... curiously, which part of the word PERSONAL do you not understand?
... and, what authority do you possess, to insist that I divulge my life plans?

I guess it might be better for you to keep it personal so that no one will know if you are onboard a sinking ship...:D
cheers!!

You have not answer my question regarding Vietnam.
Perhap, Temasek and GIC would like to announce their investment amount, where they invest, how much was made/loss. They can keep their strategies. Futhermore, it is of even more public interest than HyperFocal private business practice.
Even the former president did not get that info.
