No NS please, we're Indonesian PRs

The Straits Times
Indonesia has asked Singapore to exempt Indonesian citizens who are permanent residents from performing National Service.
Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said that such an exemption was necessary as Indonesian citizens doing military service in another country risk losing their citizenship.
'For our citizens, whatever the reason, undertaking foreign military training would mean losing their citizenship under the citizenship law,' Mr Hassan was quoted as saying by the Republika daily on Friday.
He said that the issue of national service for Indonesian citizens with permanent resident status had been around since the Singapore government started requiring foreign citizens with such status to be enlisted.
'In our communication with the Singapore government, we have requested that Indonesian citizens, including those with permanent resident status, to be exempted from doing national service,' he said.
He did not disclose when the Indonesian government had made the request.
He also said the government could only remind Indonesians that under the law, their citizenship could be revoked if they agreed to be enlisted.
i think its worth asking ourselves,
why was NS nowadays 'less siong' than before?
what is the intent?
i DO NOT think it is to attract new immigrants sons to perform the duty.
i hope and trust that NS is not catered to the economy like doing business in an INC.
i think not right?
my buddy is indonesian PR...but he ish gg to take sg citizenship riaos

he must be crazy. He doesnt serve for just 2 years. He will have to follow up with all the IPPT, ICT, remedial training (if failed IPPT) till age 40
Want keep your PR or Citizenship..... then you have to do NS.
Give up on your PR or Citizenship..... then you need not do NS.
It is as simple as that. You can't have it BOTH WAY.
And lets put it this way..... if PR doesn't need to do NS.... would the local 'feel' happy

2nd generation PRs should do NS. We cannot change a policy just because of one country.

what is there to be surprise about that?
what is implied when a person takes citizenship?
i tell you 1 incident of a new immigrant.
he works mainly , most of his time, outside sg.
his family is entirely overseas in his original country.
he dislikes sg lifestyle or working life.
i thus asked him, why took up citizenship?
he said he was given, so why not?
then i realise he also enjoys using the passport to work in the west and elsewhere.
before his son turned 18 or 19 for NS, being PR, he gave a reason to give up PR of his son who is now studying in his original motherland.
so , the moral of my little story is this.
a person who takes up citizenship does not show me why he took it up. it could be for numerous reasons.
please ask those new immigs why and report to this forum
so as to achieve prosperity and progres for ours national.

no.. i will think about it... got 5 years to consider. if lky died and people still vote in pap years after years, then i will definitely give up hopes with sg.

i have similar colleagues like that before;
- one FT was educated in hwa chong jc and nus degree in engineering, spoke lousy english and asked me to correct/improve his cv. constantly hear him saying how sg cannot make it and how great china is. strange thing is; he has been here for nearly 10 years with no ns, and think he has moved to usa for work and living there permanently.
- another FT, saw him in ncs and in the last company, quiet fella and i asked him casually if he has taken up citizenship. he said yes and added that having a red passport is for convenience and nothing else. WTF does he need to say the last statement to me for?
some FTs are making a fool out of the whole citizenship thing, and thank to the foreign-worshipping, local-bashing PAP that we are in this mess.
I am just thinking.
With so many PRs and new citizens going into the army, will there be any security issues when there is a crisis?
Or has this question already been answered long time ago by the people at the top? ![]()

For the new citizen, since they have already taken up Singaporean citizenship, so shouldn't be any security issue (cause we don't allow dual citizenship). They have to give up their original citizenship first.
If I am not wrong, only 2nd generation PR need to serve NS. And after NS, they can choose to convert to Singaporean (not sure if they decide to remain as PR, need to serve reservist or not, if yes, then maybe so...).
Then ask them stay in other country lor... Must be fair mah... If all guys need to do NS then it should be the way...
Else might as well convert to like only volunteers...![]()
If PR can be exempted and enjoy almost same benefit as Singaporean, then I also want to convert to PR, can or not?

Not anymore foolish then to believe that local born and breed S'porean will be staying here forever and serving the country.
Like I said in another thread.....
If those ''FT - Citizens'' decided to stay and remain 'loyal'..... good lor. If they 'Run' at the 1st sign of trouble.... won't make much difference, as alot of S'porean had long ago planned the same thing.
If those PR wants to stay.... then Shut The Fu*k Up and do your NS like all the others S'poreans Boys..... if NS is too much for you.... or your country have Laws against it..... then you would have to make a choice to Stay or Leave..... Simple as that.
s'pore is like a hotel... like, stay... don't like, leave...
like LKY said, too many people leave the hotel, get more outsiders come in to stay lo...
it's a hotel, an inn, a shelter... nothing more... indirectly hinted by LKY... your beloved leader
