Save money, get frozen meat: AVA

GO frozen, and save your money too.
That is the message from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA), when it launched its Frozen Meat Public Education Campaign on Saturday.
Given rising food prices, frozen meat is a good alternative to fresh meat, says the AVA's campaign. And celebrity chef Violet Oon was on hand to prove the point.
She whipped up several dishes using frozen meat.
Also, as part of the campaign, there will be a roadshow to educate the public on how to buy, handle, store and cook frozen meat.
Ms Grace Fu, Minister of State for National Development, speaking at the event, urged Singaporeans to go frozen and thus stretch their dollar.
'People are still resistant to using frozen meat because they think it is less tasty and wholesome. This is not true,' she said.
She added that about 58 per cent of the chicken and pork consumed in Singapore today is frozen.
And at least two supermarkets report that in the past six months, more Singaporeans have been making the switch and buying cheaper frozen products.
At Sheng Siong, for instance, a fresh whole chicken costs about $5.60 while a frozen one is only $4.
NTUC FairPrice said sales of frozen pork and beef have increased by 15 per cent in the last six months while frozen poultry sales jumped 25 per cent.
Said Mr Tng Ah Yiam, its director of integrated purchasing: 'We've seen more customers switch as the savings can be substantial.'
In conjunction with AVA's campaign, FairPrice has started, since Saturday, to offer discounts on frozen meat products.
Over at Sheng Siong supermarket, its purchasing manager, Mr Phillip Leow, said sales of frozen whole chickens has doubled in the last six months.
Sales of frozen poultry parts such as wings and drumsticks have also gone up 20 per cent.
Ms Eileen Poh, 26, who works in marketing, said she does not mind choosing frozen meat over fresh meat.
'It is much cheaper and also more convenient because some frozen parts are conveniently boneless,' she said.
... and then when demand pushes price of Frozen Meats up, then what??
haven't happen yet.... I'll start to worry about it IF & WHEN it does.
But as always.... feel free to don't take the advice from AVA and contiune to Eat, Buy, Spent as you had always been doing. You earn your own money.... you spent it as you will.
When demand for frozen meat go up also, the gov will advice you to be more healthy and eat more veg and less meat. When veg also go up, gov will advice you to shed more weight by eating less. ![]()
Another way of saving costs,is to buy meat from JB.Pork and chicken is at your own risk

I don't think you can bring them across the causeway (unless you want to have all your meals in JB?).
