Govt review that might allow public protests draws cautious praise

EXPECT to see Mr Andrew Teo waving a placard at the Speakers' Corner in Hong Lim Park.
That is, if the Government does ease the rules to allow demonstrations to take place there.
'I want to demonstrate about the CPF,' said Mr Teo, 42, a businessman who had unsuccessfully applied for a permit to hold a protest outside the Myanmar Embassy against the junta last year.
'CPF is our hard-earned money. I want to say we should have higher returns, have the option as shareholders not to let them invest our money, and be able to hold annual general meetings.'
On Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng said in Parliament that the Government is considering letting demonstrations be held at the Speakers' Corner.
'We are presently reviewing how we can further liberalise the use of Speakers' Corner as an outdoor venue for more political activities, including demonstrations,' he had said.
If this materialises, it will debut outdoor demonstrations in Singapore for the first time in 40 years.
These have been banned since the 1960s, when bloody race riots led to deaths, injuries and damage to property.
Civil society activists hailed the possible change as 'a step forward' for public expression in Singapore, but were cautious about how it will eventually be implemented.
Business man Mr Teo, 42 applied for a permit to hold a protest out side the Myanmar Embassy, to say he unsuccessfully applied suggest that it is he who did succeed, ie. he failed. He applied accordingly. but the application was not approved by the police.
The avenue for political demonstrations (as assemblies and processions) are already there, but subject to approval.

Licencing conditions for an assembly permit
Furthermore, the police need to consider the degree of inconvenience caused to the public and businesses.
WKS is only giving a hint of possible further liberalisation. It will be a case "much ado about nothing". Don't celebrate yet.

... I mean, it's the same with watching movies; why would I want to spend $10.50 on a movie that has been censored senseless? It's like being short-changed! I'd rather buy pirated DVDs and watch the full versions & truly enjoy every dollar...

For years, problems are being locked up like NKF without any ministers or senior civil servants feeling the need to change or solve problems.
There ought to be some solutions now with our over-paid people in government to take responsibility for mistakes.

There is little difference between what you get online and what you get on print as they are from the same source - local media. I don't see how this online version is different from the one on print.
Haiz.
People who want to protest against government policy also must need government approval.![]()

Before you hold a protest demonstration you must assemble mah, or have a procession, or a gathering.
Maybe WKS will liberalize and waive permits for political demonstration, but still require religious, cultural, social assemblies and procession to have police permits..![]()
... I think it is positive that WKS even considers it...
... lets wait and see, if it's going to be another one of their 'Stay Dry While Swimming' initiatives or not....
