"alamak, there was a very minor incident at upper boon keng hawker centre today but it was very sad there were two OLs at the next table from mine and one of them had ordered a jia jia liang teh to wash down her lunch barely had she poured the drink into her plastic cup when an old man appeared and tried to take the can but when he realised the can still had liang teh, he put it back and waited fpr her to finish her drink the OL was quite annoyed because she thought the old man's hands were dirty and dirtied her drink, so she didn't want the rest meanwhile, the old man kept waiting
then another oldie, this time a woman, came and tried to take the can, and the two old folks started arguing with each other over who saw the can first the OLs got fed up and left without finishing their meal then the char siew rice stall owner came out and scolded the two old folks for making a scene and chasing customers away
ALL THESE...OVER AN ALUMINIUM CAN!"
I think aluminium can collector is just one of the problem .... not that I want to deny the old folks from earning a living, but they must also do it with some courtesy and decency !
It is rather rude of them to just snatch your can, in the middle of your meal .... without asking permission !!! Frankly they could have put in a little more effort of at least asking - can i have the empty can !!!
Next is some of these collectors have a very bad habit - they take the can and just step it beside you ... yep they trying to flatten it so more space for cans in plastic bag .... !!! Can't they collect a few then go somewhere further to flatten them ?
Also those selling tissues .... man !!! Some of them are like forcing you to buy !!! ... if you do not buy , for the lucy ones will get a black face from them, unlucky days you get nasty words from them even.
Open your eyes and see the big picture!
Should these old folks be collecting cans and cardboard at their age?
These old folks can very well be your parents or even yourself in years to come.
Friggin wake up your ideas and stop complaining about them and ask yourself and your goverment what are we doing to help them now and for the future generations of seniors.
that actually means money for no income people like them leh...![]()

totally agree. pay and pay but in the end still have to collect cans to earn living at such an age. tsk tsk. what are they doing with their age in a 1st world country?
born to be f#cked, live to be F#cked and die f#cked...uniquely singapore
Whats wrong with collecting cans as a means of income ?
ppl no steal no rob oso is use hands n legs to earn an honest livin wat.

unfortunately, this is a common malaise. not sure why they are a neglected lot. i am in china now for work for the week, and a common sight i see in the last 5 days when i am on the pavement walkways are old folks rummaging trash bins for plastic bottles.
in some ways, it depresses me. here they co-exist in a country where the young are so expressive and aggressive in their day to day life. they are left behind as china go forward. these old men/women who go about their slow pace rummaging from 1 bin to another are invisible to the rest of the people. they are sadly forgotten and neglected.
who's responsible and what is the right thing to do? i sadly do not know as well.
In PRC, people that worked can retire at 45 years old and get retirement benefits from the commie govt.
In Singapore, there's no respect for old people.
Pui !

We can do that but where shall we impose additional taxes ? Raising GST by 2% to erm fund workfare and other benefits has already met strong opposition and discontentment. What more a welfare scheme ?
and these old uncles and aunties are getting younger and younger. There's an auntie (that look) in her 50s collecting cardboard near my office building. There's a uncle (abt 50s also bah) frequently goes through public bins for stuff to sell.

All the fuzz for nothing "jia jia liang teh" or all JJ cans are "teng ay" or hard ones, ie made of tin and not alluminium. They should be collecting only alluminium cans not tin cans.
hey, i wonder if anyone knows where the cans that these old people go to eventually? i mean, where do the old people sell the cans to.
thanks for any replies coz im thinkg of doing a documentary on such people and the can collecting stuff ;O
In China, old people R&R in parks and enjoy their old age. In Singapore, old people wash toilets, pick up cardboards and drink cans to make a living till they cannot move. In China, it is considered a great dishonour to allow one's old parents to continue working for their living. I really hope when I am old, I need not have to do all these for a living, but then by then, maybe the FT would have take up all these opportunities so the old folks in singapore have to go even lower to make a living.

Please go ahead and do the documentary, don't just think about it. You'll know a lot of things by doing it.
young ones too...i have encountered young school girls (12-13 years old) pretending to be out of cash and need $2 for the ride home. best part is, they seems to be out of cash ever so often because i see them at the same location every other day preying on the unsuspecting. and they asked you point blank too.
very bold.....
one time i play kick the can...my can also missing :(
Hi guys and gals,
Any idea where to find can collectors in Singapore? We are thinking of doing a documentary on what happens in a typical can collector's day.
can frequently see at macritchie bus stop... got someone come over, take apart the rubbish bin, then dig out cans or magazines/newspaper, put into a plastic bag he's carrying, then continue on to other dustbins... Then walk off to the next bus stop...
or near old clementi interchange, got 1 big big hawker centre... Frequently can see 1 old man collecting, teeth half gone one... Then he will also stamp the cans flatter so that he has more space to carry in his plastic bag.
These are the places I frequent more often...
Do send me a video when you finish your documentary. It would be enriching to watch. Thanks.
What to do ?
Our very efficient and caring gahment.. forget .. to implement the Equal Employment Opportunity Act to protect age discriminated hiring mah.
In the US of A. It is illegal to ask the interviewee's age.
So employers look at their experience.. capabilities and proper fit in the organization.
Unlike Singapore.. if you lose your job after your mid life crisis.. be prepared to collect cans or drive a Taxi for as long as you need.
hey knchs...how wld u guys be doing the docu(mabbe we can share ideas)..is it possible that u email me your contact at ([email protected])
lookg foward to your response..
thanks!
