Nurse almost carries out wrong procedure on child. SGH says sorry
A woman had a shocking experience when she took her three-month old son for a routine review at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) on Feb 28.
Ms Tan wrote in to STOMP to tell of the unprofessional conduct of the nurse she encountered.
The encounter started off on a bad note when the nurse openly expressed her disapproval of having to deal with Ms Tan's child.
Then, when Ms Tan was waiting outside the treatment room, she heard her baby "crying and screaming in a manner that was new and alarming to me", prompting her to rush into the room.
According to Ms Tan, Instead of giving the baby two routine injections and an oral medication, the nurse was holding on to an airway suction apparatus, which is used for drawing sputum for testing.
Upon Ms Tan's complaint, it was then that the nurse first asked for the child's name and was surprised to realise the mistake.
SGH has since apologised unreservedly to Ms Tan for the incident and counselled the nurse concerned.
