I reckon
For the lazy bastards who wants welfare, tax the high-income to feed the low income....

Theres a calculator at the bottom as well. Anyone interested can feed in the figures for your personal tax relief: handicapped spouse, brother, sister etc..and find out from here and your personal income tax experience that most Singaporeans do not pay much income tax at all..

i was wondering that too! LOL!!
like as if i spent 2 years here and i dont know who's the prime minister of oz.
Some former singaporeans living in AUS tell em that singapore's taxation is a much better system...

in sg, the direct tax is low but the indirect tax is high. that is vice versa for oz.
take your uni education for example, it would easily cost $100k+ for sgporean coming here to study, but the cost for a local here to study uni is alot cheaper.
i do disagree with the high tax strategy to supplement the welfare for the lazy and mothers that go on pregnant so as to collect more money.
tax is high but it depend on how good your accountant is. read this book if u are interested.

It's a better system ONLY AND ONLY you don't compare the benefits gained in terms of cost forgone.
Let's say you have both countries Singapore and Australia both having the same population and same GDP.
Both country having the same government revenue from taxes say $100 million.
Not forgetting that Singapore has 4 PMs making 5-6 times more than the US President and the Cabinet Ministers making 3 times more than the US President.
Singapore politicians appropriate $30 million from the government revenue, while Australian politicians appropriate $10 million from the government revenue.
Which country has more funds to spend on it's citizens after the appropriation by politicians?
Our situation is not unlike the situation in Animal Farm, where the pigs after gaining control of Manor Farm, choose to appropriate excessively in order
to lead a lifestyle of decadence.
but as u can see in Singapore, good and services are cheaper than Aus....

That's not entirely true, based on the "law of one price", price of goods should be almost the same (subject to transportation cost) in all free markets.
Unless tariffs are imposed on the imports of goods, like in the case China.
Else goods traded in a free market should be almost the same.
If you take Singapore for example, it imports almost all of it's agricultural needs, taking into the effect of transporting agricultural products
from Australia, it will actually cost more in Singapore than Australia.
Cost of other agriculture products like meat, pasta and rice might actually be cheaper when compared to Singapore.
Unless you talk about having your meals in a restaurant everyday, then cost will be more significant.
Probably one of the reasons why Australia has a lower Gini Coefficient, because it pays it's low wage earners more
than what Singapore pays it's low wage earners.
In Australia and Hong Kong, the transport operators have monthly passes, which are much cheaper than per trip fares charged.
SMRT does not provide this option of having a monthly pass for commuters, which more or less explains the SMRT exploitation
of daily commuters for more profits.

I still do not understand why the high pay for Sg politicians?
High pay to preven corruption?..How high will that be?
There is no price to prevent corruption. Honesty is a virtue that is priceless...
Is their work more harder than Bush, Howard or Rudd?
Remember the above mentioned people have international matters to take care of too....
I agree Some things are cheaper in AUS like meat and groceries...
But the Manner of everyday life is what matters most..in that way singapore wins
do u like to be holed up in your quiet home in aus during public holidays and sundays?...Do u like to go out in the evenings just to find that most shops are closed?
I recall some guy from AuS once commented after staying in Singapore for a while that ÿou can be poor in Singapore but still enjoy the way of life, surrounded by lots of people, entertainment hotspots ect...accroding to him, lots of cash in yr bank but leading a mundane life everyday is not worth

Perhaps you prefer a hustle and bustle kind of lifestyle offered by Singapore.
For me, I prefer wide open spaces and nature, so a difference in our opinions.
Maybe you are still very young, haven't been seasoned by shopping in the city.
I'd rather be cooped up at home than crowded orchard road during the weekends and holidays.
Holidays and weekends is more for family bonding, rather than spending your time walking aimlessly in a crowd.
I doubt that Aus guy understand the true meaning of the word poor in Singapore, at best he would be middle class not poor.
cooked up at home in singapore is still not too bad ...
Letter to Gopalan Nair:
Hi!
I have been reading many of your articles...agreed 99%...1%
is off bec. your words are "too" kind to the Lee family. It is so damn
obvious the Lee family bends the law to keep them in power. It is good
that you emigrated to the States or else you could end up as a regular
client of the "Changi Hilton".
I immigrated to Canada in May
1991 and now live in Edmonton. I am like you, one of those "talent"
that the PAP govt would die to have....First Class Engineering in
Instrumentation from UK and also a MSc degree (MBA) form the highly
prestigious Imperial College, London University in 1983.
Please
email me if you happen to visit our city. I will arrange my small group
of about 8 to 10 ex-Singaporeans (all age 50+) to listen to you and
your experience. We meet and phone regularly to discuss on Singapore
matters. We will celebrate when Lee Kuan Yew dies. As long as he is
around Singaporeans live in fear.
NO one fear his sissy cancer-stricken sons and all those President BG generals who are trained to fight in "video games".
Look
at the JI case...with the whole nation of army and police force they
cannot even catch a limbing man. Perhaps the Lee family might have
killed him in the jail and dare not let this news out fearing that he
JI gp in S.E. Asian will take revenge. And it took 700 of the NS men to
catch two robbers hidden in Pulau Tekong.
At the rate Singapore goes, it can finish in 10 to 15 yrs.

Taxes aside, I actually prefer Sydney to Singapore. The weather is good, fishing is good, beer is cheap, huge variety in the supermarkets, relatively comfortable rides on public transport ( don't have to fark backside in MRT with farking Singaporeans) and others.

same here. i hate crowds.
now i live at the edge of brisbane river. except for the pesky motorboats that occassionally pass by and those crackling cucakoos, it is dead quiet here.
tradies here earn heaps. they like to ask me if i want to pay cash (cash = no invoice and gst). hit one extra nails and they will charge me more. i hope to bring my bro-in-laws here, who are skilled in rennovation works, carpentry and eletrical.
