Can Singaporeans be as patriotic?
I COULD not help but feel the patriotism of Chinese citizens here in China as many marched in protest against recent foreign intervention in events leading up to the Beijing Olympics.
News reports showed many Chinese taking up flags and protesting against foreign outlets, especially the French superstore Carrefour, in response to the aborted torch relay in Paris.
But the protests were peaceful and non-confrontational. I could feel the protestors' nationalistic fervour.
Their patriotism puts me to shame. I feel that I would never take to the streets to protect and honour my country's name at the risk of my own personal safety. What if there was a riot and I was trampled to death? There are too many risks involved in taking part in a demonstration.
The moments when I do feel patriotic are during National Day when the President stands to attention as our national anthem is being sung.
I fear that many Singaporeans will leave the country if there really is an impending confrontation with another country.
Will we stand up and defend Singapore? Do we fear for our own personal safety and that of our families and flee the country at the first whiff of danger?
The feeling I get from the Chinese here is that they are willing to die to defend their country.
We have much to learn from them.

So going out and starting a protest or demonstration is a benchmark of how patriotic singaporeans are to Singapore?
Singapore is so small... theres barely enough ppl to fill in the job vacancies especially when the IRs open. Go protest and Singapore will sink sooner.
What you see is just a phenomenon... becos alot of ppl go protest I oso go lor... or the others say im not patriotic.
As long as I know im willing to defend the country its enough... everyONE counts .... start with youself ![]()
Im sure if there's anything worth standing up for our own country, SG'reans will oso do so. This is, afterall, our motherland. The reason why u r feelin doubtful is bcos no such thing has happen that allow u to see the patriotic side of your fellow countrymates.
If anyone in this land fights, it's for nobody else except their loved ones, friends and their own homes they have built. it's not for any of your talented talents so-to-speak.
I'll kill all corrupt and deserters together with invaders. I'm pretty sure HyperFocal will be a deserter so that pretty much sums up certain issues.
Singaporeans dont like protest, they have better things to do like earning money.![]()
In times of crisis/war, i am sure they wont forget one important Singaporean trait - pragmatism. What is the most pragmatic solution? We cant eat ideals. If leaving the country with their families and contributing funds from abroad is the most pragmatic, i am sure Singaporeans wont rule out that option.![]()
the pro-china group came out `fighting' after only a prolonged pro-tibet demonstration. for all you know, it could have been mobilized by the government. australia is pro-china, so perhaps it is easier for such things to happen.
kinda reminds me of the `victory parade' PAP organized during the GE when results are announced. in those polling centres where results are announced, civil servants are mobilized in numbers to camp out at these centres to be shown on TV the overwhelming support PAP enjoys. they are obviously all staged. my friend, a civil servant, always dreaded such moments because it meant losing beauty sleep for her.
i will take this with a pinch of salt. singaporeans can wave their flags in public for all they want. but i know they won't.
Go protest and Singapore will sink sooner.
Time to wake up my friend.
Can we go protest against ' the call for WKS to resign" police catch or not
