For sichuan earthquake, tv stations in hongkong and taiwan organised simultaneous fund raising shows, many stars and big business bosses gave support and generous donations. Taiwan president ma ying jiu volunteered as telephone operator to receive donation calls. so far taiwan has collected 2.4 billion while hongkong 11 billion.
why our tv station is doing nothing?
I dont know.....maybe this question can be asked to the TV station here....
But apart from practicalities or etc as the reasonings........maybe the difference is the distance.....HK and TW are nearer to Mainland China.....physically as well as in social links.....
Although 75% of SG population are Chinese....I did notice something......when I flip ST newspaper afew days ago.....there was a photo of Singaporean rescue team being sent to China, in the plane tarmac, and an official was handshaking the team.
That ST photo showed/ zoomed on the team members who are Singaporeans of non-Chinese descent at the forefront, and the official also happen to be non-Chinese.
As I believe ST is not a ragtag newspaper, I think that photo was a deliberate subconscious messaging. For me I just smiled when I saw that photo, coz I know what they were trying to portray. I dont mind, but I think sometimes SG government maybe abit too cautious or sensitive. Actually I believe minorities will not mind at all if some people show affection or solidarity with their ethnic kins. That is just natural. But I think maybe this positioning is related to the more general strategic positioning of Singapore as an independent country.
So..yah.....for me if u ask why the TV here has lower-level intensity or lower profile.....
I kind of suspect there might be practical innocent reasons, but also maybe social reasons and political reasons, both deliberate and non-deliberate.
