Strategic And National Interest Could Be The Basis For Future Ties, Says Syed Hamid
PUTRAJAYA, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said ties between Malaysia and Singapore could be based on strategic and national interest in future, no more on the concept of being neighbourly.
This is because of both countries regard bilateral ties differently with Malaysia being neighbourly while Singapore cares only about its economy, he said.
"I think if we look at the foreign policy of a country, the core of its policy is its strategic and national interest," he told reporters after attending a Hari Raya get-together organised by Malaysian Youth Foundation, here Monday night.
He said the strain in relations between Malaysia and Singapore would remain if Singapore is very aloof with its foreign policy.
To a question, Syed Hamid said: "This is not the question of compromise...Singapore has two choices. If it refuses to compromise...go to war." But war, he said, is not the solution in resolving problems between two countries.
"The approach in knowing what is ours and not to give in without knowing what is ours," he said, adding that the time had come for Malaysia to think business like to benefit from its ties with other countries.

Like his father before him, during the early politics of Singapore in Malaysia during the 1960's, he is now just as bad as his father was.Originally posted by Gun:December 31 , 2002 09:04AM

If he could think properly, he would not hav made that remarks....guess it is a ploy for him to raise his profile ( to show his hard and tough character).Originally posted by edLow:Cant they think of anything better? i am just a bit worried when Mahathir steps down (not tat he is tat fantastic), and the younger group takes over, how rash can they be...plus our team of government is also getting younger and never braved the tension times their ancestors have had...
Maybe a common enemy will united the 2...e.g. a terrorist attack that affect both sides (but let's not hope 4 that at all)
Ya agreeable, thou it's sillypore here.... At least we still know how to think unlike.......Originally posted by sgboy2004:I doubt our sg gov will respond to such newspaper report...unless the fellow start to provoke again, and put troops up the border

Dear Gentlemen,
I believe this talk about war with Singapore definitely presents a "CLEAR & PRESENT DANGER" to Singapore. The Malaysian Government has definitely gone overboard in distracting its' citizen in their economic woes and trying to gain some votes for their up coming national elections.
"A good neighbour doesn't threaten their neighbour with force when they fight over a pot of flowers on their corridor."
A gentle reminder : For those who are familar with the background which started the Gulf War, the Malaysian Government are behaving very similarly to the Iraqi Government except this time instead of cruel oil, it's WATER. The Iraqi Government had claimed that the Kuwaitis had occupied the Bubiyan Island which belongs to them and stole oil from the oil field. And the rest I guess every body know what happened.
The Malaysian Government may not be as crazy as the Iraqi. Let's not forget that we do not know what is in their mind exactly. The next thing they would claimed is that Singapore used to be part of the Johore Sultanate and wish to reclaimed their rights on the Island.
We definitely have to step up our vigilance against Malaysia but not over-reacting. We cannot let what happened to the Kuwaitis happen to us.
I think we (the citizens of Singapore) should show that we are united behind the Government of Singapore on their stand. We should show our protest by STOP visiting Malaysia, STOP importing their produce, STOP all forms of investment in Malaysia etc. (I believe the Singapore Government cannot and will not make such request on their citizens as it will be seen as a provoking act leading to war.)
We should not let the Malaysian Government dictate our lives.
And for all the NSMen, please treat your In-Camp Training seriously as we have a CLEAR & PRESENT DANGER !!!!

there were many more close calls in the past whereby armour units were on high alert, and stationed in woodlands with their guns pointing across the border, and the tanks were there too.Originally posted by laser51088:Ooo lah lah. . . never been this close to war before . . . what a comment. . .

He should be someone who is careful with his words infront of the media and the public, especially words aimed specifically at other countries. Just like our PM, who is careful with his words and everything he says, may have some covered meaning.
Since he(malaysia) said " Go to WAR", his government must have considered that as one of the option. I dun believe that what he said is a slip of his tongue or wadever excuse his pm would say to cover up his subordinate's words.
But i believe that SAF is not totally superior to the MAF. A war would result with many casualties on our side too. They are not stupid. I'm sure they have secrets (weapons), that are able to hold back(for a while) a Singapore Divisional onslaught. However, night raids from the air(F16D) and land(elites) would slaughter them. So, get ready soldiers.... to feed them with bullets.
Btw, does SAF rangers undergo Prisioner-of-War treatment as one of their training? I heard this from somewhere, accidentally. Can NDU or any rangers here please enlighten me? Does the NDU go through the same thing?
Suffice to say.... those who went through ranger POW trainning...Originally posted by NDU:![]()
