Everybody knows that in my bag I have a hatchet, and a very sharp one. You take me on, I take my hatchet, we meet in the cul-de-sac
man i fucking love this one
All these were quoted thru his lifetime at a different position, scenarios and state of the country. But i find him speaking with consistency, that constant behavorial and objectives he seeks has never to change and that is where i admired my MM.
Recently, i seem to read somewhere with him saying " In this world, which government support and help the oppositions? all of them will try to destroy their oppositions in the best possible way they can, otherwise, this is not politics."

If you believe that the hatchet was good - try this one:-
"Supposing Catherine Lim was writing about me and not the prime minister...She would not dare, right? Because my posture, my response has been such that nobody doubts that if you take me on, I will put on knuckle-dusters and catch you in a cul de sac...
Anybody who decides to take me on needs to put on knuckle dusters.
If you think you can hurt me more than I can hurt you, try. There is no other way you can govern a Chinese society."
- SM Lee Kuan Yew, The Man and His Ideas, 1997
Does the God Father need to do it himself, leaving his mark on the knuckle dusters, or can he not simply give the kiss of death ?
Such is the bravado talk of an imitative John Wayne, swaggering in to show how tough he is, but will at the end leave it to his side-kicks to make sure that the dust do not even touch him.
His knuckle duster and hatchet are merely spoken figuratively - as they refers to his Senior Counsel and his Judges.
hey, i'm just admiring his humor. love the touch of poetry to it.
Urban legend!

But we either believe in democracy or we do not. If we do, then, we must say categorically, without qualification, that no restraint from any democratic process, other than by the ordinary law of the land, should be allowed. ...
If you believe in democracy, you must believe in it unconditionally. If you believe that men should be free, then, they should have the right of free association, of free speech, of free publication. Then, no law should permit those democratic processes to be set at nought, and no excuse, whether of security, inconvenience to traffic, or inconvenience to police officers, should allow a government to be deterred from doing what it knows to be right, and what it must know to be right. ...

If it is not totalitarian to arrest a man and detain him, when you cannot charge him with any offence against any written law -- if that is not what we have always cried out against in Fascist states -- then what is it?

Alas, what poor Marxists they were!

But yes, nothing mind boggling about it. It is what it is- words that make sense. The only thing, perhaps, is our penchant to retract in horror at the effect of such words.
And here we were, thinking that MM was such a good, clean, incorruptible, honest, hardworking, virtuous, nation-first man.
kekeke.
I lazy to say more, read this if you’re too free with nothing to do:
Thanks for the link, very insightful. ![]()
lol. cul-de-sac. very poetic, but overused.
sigh.. i just.. feel very disappointed somewhat.. that he changed so much from his times as an opposition leader, you know?
now it seems that his talk about ideals of democracy is only when it suited him. just so.. sigh.
but he is one frisky grandpa man. one of a kind.
i remember grandpa lee, once said about the dr chee shouting "mr goh, come here mr goh, you can run, but you can't hide" incident, that he's lucky that mr goh is a nice guy, if it was him, he'd fight it out with chee or smth, cannot remember.
smth about growing up in the streets or smth. dang i forgot.
You know, this was just one of the things he said which infuriated me, on top of everything else. Apparently Singaporeans were (are?) too stupid for his arrogant little nose to take, so he took it upon himself to make policies to govern (LITERALLY, GOVERN) every aspect of our lives. He thinks he's some... GOD (God forbid!) or something. He thinks he's some ruler of all mankind that if he was not there, we wouldn't be able to function and that we are a nation of stupid people who can't think for ourselves. He is such a funny man... so disrespectful of human beings, yet people can still blindly support such a person. Maybe... just maybe those who support him are those he described? Food for thought, yes? But I still hate him though. Such a disrespectful man, treating us like... objects. Gross."Mine is a very matter-of-fact approach to the problem. If you can select a population and they're educated and they're properly brought up, then you don't have to use too much of the stick because they would already have been trained. It's like with dogs. You train it in a proper way from small. It will know that it's got to leave, go outside to pee and to defecate. No, we are not that kind of society. We had to train adult dogs who even today deliberately urinate in the lifts." - Lee Kuan Yew on Singapore society, The Man & His Ideas, 1997

I didn't know he refer to all Singaporeans as DOGS.
WTF?!
There are many idiots who treat him like GOD here. The geniuses here treat him the reverse spelling of GOD.
i didn't know that either. sob sob
wrong post
Hi guys, me neither, until I accidentally googled for him and came across that page. Call it fate, God's divine revelation (LOL) or luck- out of my 20 years on this Earth, I finally saw the kind of person he is. Of course, 10 years ago I was still busy in primary school, so I had no inkling of what happened, but I grew up with the knowledge that there were a lot of dissidents slamming his book- or, memoirs, as he so fondly calls it. Hai. At least Hitler killed those he doesn't like. This guy makes everyone worship him and then gets away with such words. Damn pro lah...
@lion: hehehe. It's just a matter of time. One thing is good, though. His son doesn't seem to be in the same vein as him. well, at least not in full. If baby Lee has any semblance of respect and gratitude left for the Singaporean, he would perhaps, make some changes and listen to the people. Alas... his father is still up there with his chain and whip (lol so kinky xD) so he can't do much. Oh well, only time can tell, but I know for sure, a lot of people are praying to their respective God(s) to curse the whole famiLee. Kinda sad. Power corrupts the individual. That's why we must always have a lot of individuals to share the burden!
Talking about freedom of speech, here's a joke:
Oooh ooh!! Don't mind, I wanna share a (rather crude) joke:
Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has the right to express one. The only exception is Singapore.
I'm talking about the opinion, not the asshole. xD
Thanks to the great man LKY for what the people (majority) are today.
